>*US president insisted he wants to take over Arctic island*
She told him not for sale. Another senior official stated “fuck off”, although not at him.
It’s been a big thing in Denmark for the past month. Ever since he “didn’t rule out military action” or whatever the exact wording was. It’s brought massive debate about Denmark’s relationship with Greenland. Their desire to be independent while also being heavily dependent on the massive subsidy they receive from Denmark. They have complete self-government on the island and default to Denmark on foreign relations and military. In return, they get 2 seats in the Danish parliament. Denmark gets massive territorial control and a seat at all Arctic summits with Russia, Canada and the USA. Not sure if the UK is also there?
It’s really strange. Having been implicitly threatened by our foremost ally and trading partner. Turns out, the USA is no longer as dependable as we thought they were. And that’s despite us having backed them in every war since the Gulf war. We lost just as many men pr capita as the USA did in both Iraq and Afghanistan. And what do we get in return? The diplomatic relations of a bull in a China shop. But we will continue to be dependable and work towards peace, cooperation and mutual respect.
Has anyone told this piece of shit that Greenland no can do fucking golf courses for more than a week a year?
Denmark has more soft power than USA.
Anything but a direct armed conflict and Denmark will come out of it the winner. Trump is to much of an idiot to understand how much diplomatic power Denmark holds, power carefully built over the past 80 years.
USA have only the 2 mayor advantages in having a larger economy and military. Thats it.
But with the exonomic route Trump is conducting, he could vary well destroy thier economy and with it be forced to cut back on military spendings too.
Anyone know what the NATO Treaty says about attacking another NATO member?
In American law, treaties are co-equal with the US Constitution as the supreme law of the land. Not that it would matter to the quislings of the Republican Party, but violating a treaty is the same thing as violating the Constitution.
denmark should never be in a position to sell a part of the “kingdom” to anyone, but greenland should be able to get the independence they wish and if they wanted to become USA territory it should be the right, though I don’t believe that is what they want, and if it ended up that way I suspect they would regret, now they have a welfare system with free hospital and free education (which would of cause take part in denmark).
as a dane, if denmark were to sell greenland to USA, like it was done with the virgin islands in 1917, then denmark should be taken to court in hague, for crimes against the people in Greenland.
Sorry Denmark. I like to think that most Americans are against this Greenland nonsense. I am still bewildered how so many people here allowed the proverbial wool to be pulled over their eyes. I’m hoping the Dems can win big during midterms.
Why did Trump want to buy Greenland? Because he heard it was the coolest real estate deal ever!
