Took a look at this page and was surprised that Iceland is on the list of places where it’s banned. Why is this?

  1. Iceland never had much of a porn industry and therefore I would stake my life on guessing that this law is little more than the result of some virtue posturing by some politician who had nothing immediate nor important to take care of.

Once something like this happens, the legislation becomes stuck in a limbo of either no one caring enough to decriminalize it or no one wanting to put their reputation on the line as being the politician who legalized the production of porn.

  2. Iceland definitely has a porn industry. It’s called the church.

Fuck god. (please call your family & friends to come downvote this, I think we should aim for a record of people who believe a fictional book is the word of a god up in the clouds)

  3. A combination of two things in my opinion:

    1. Christian religion dominated Icelandic culture for a long, long time. We all know how sex is shameful in the eyes of god

    2. We have a tiny population and everyone either knows everyone or has a family member/friend who knows the person

Sprinkled with a cup of authoritarianism over women during the 20th century

  4. This article is a bit misleading. Porn isn’t banned entirely; it’s legal to own and watch porn but producing and distributing it is illegal. These laws aren’t really enforced anymore.

  5. A ) porn is not banned. Porn production and distribution is banned. Not the consumption of it.

B ) this is an old morality law that was passed in the long ago and nobody bothered to try to repeal it once societal views changed because it’s such a non issue and a fairly weird platform for a politician to run on. It is for all intents and purposes unenforced and you can watch porn all you like here. Given there are a fair few icelandic girls on onlyfans, some of which have made the news in discussions about the platform and thus aren’t exactly secret, even the production of porn isn’t enforced in any real capacity.

  6. What all the other guys said but i would like to add that at least one of the leading political parties that are in goverment today has it on their website that they think porn should be illegal and more should be done to enforce it.

  7. There has always been a strong current of paternalism in icelandic society(and other nordic countries as well). We believe people are too stupid, greedy and evil to be allowed complete freedom to make their own choices , we used to ban or heavily control a whole lot more of things people like, but nowadays we have to settle for controlling things that have the potential to be harmful, like alcohol and naked people.
We’re pretty excited about possible developments in neural chip technology, hopefully we’ll be able to program people to think correctly in the future.

I’m sorry what was your question about?
