Argentina’s Milei tells West: Join Trump’s anti-woke alliance

1. Speaking in Davos, Argentina President Javier Milei announced there is a global alliance of “anti-woke” leaders, including himself and:

   – US President Donald Trump

   – Italian PM Giorgia Meloni

   – Elon Musk

   – Hungary PM Viktor Orban

   – El Salvador President Nayib Bukele

   – Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu

   He said that the goal is to “Make the West Great Again”.

2. Milei is a rare breed. Political instincts of a populist, governing skills of a technocrat, and the touch of madness that’s needed to drag an entire country’s polity from outside of its Overton window.

3. When Republicans export their bullshit culture war abroad and kooks like this guy seizes on it to distract from real issues and use it as a cudgel.

4. What is anti woke? Is this like some kind heterosexual extremism?

5. While Milei can be very annoying and parroting right-wing talking points and buzzwords that simplify social dynamics and bury their own skeletons, some context is needed. The previous administration was spectacularly incompetent to a degree that has never been seen before in Argentina.

   I’m talking about the president having orgies with models and female journalists while nobody could go to funerals during covid lockdowns. Everything that could go wrong went wrong, and they doubled up on it on and on and on. And to mask their lack of governance skill, they went, for lack of a better word, ultra woke. I’m talking about the most performative, shallow, short-sighted progressive jargon, while the president himself was a known sexist and most of his party had serious accusations of misogyny or worse. It was absolutely insane.

   They printed money like crazy to fund their campaign against Milei, while defunding the police at the time of rising crime and using the money for public propaganda and pointless allegedly progressive initiatives, they were just a source of graft masked as social justice. There was no social justice, they didn’t believe any of it.

   So the president of Argentina is reacting in part to that. Even many progressives ended up voting for him bc the alternative was insane.

   Everyone knows this. People being friendly with him comes (purely) down to them being somewhat strategic, and knowing how to play Trump. They know that if they play nice, and give him compliments, he’ll at worst do nothing.

   When he’s out, people will stop pretending. Everyone knows this.
