It seems like he wants the show to go on for another 5 years. Since Putin doesn’t recognize him as a legitimate negotiation partner, Zelenskyy could just sit and talk alone in an empty room – it would have exactly the same effect.
The head of state is the appropriate and logical person to negotiate and liaise with foreign heads of state.
He’s the President of Ukraine: Who else should lead the peace talks for Ukraine if not him? So sill ythat one has to specify this.
That’s a clickbaity headline.
He explained that in the beginning, russia tried to exert influence the decisions of the government of Ukraine via multiple channels, via separatists, foreign politicians, pro-russian and corrupt former politicians and so on.
To make it manageable and transparent, he decided that all negotiations had to go by him. As is his democratically given right and duty as president. Putin knows he can’t make president Zelenskyy betray his country and his people, that’s why he claims he’s “not interested in negotiations” and wants someone else to make decisions. And that won’t happen.
Russia has influenced and infiltrated Ukraine for decades, and Ukraine would probably not prevail if he let his guard down on this.
At lot of western leaders should take heed of this and remind themselves that they aren’t competent to negociate on Ukraines behalf either.
The timeline there doesn’t make sense. He says that he had signed it when Russian troops were in Kiev oblast’. He signed it later, on the 30th of September. He is probably adding drama here.
It seems like he did sign it because of the separatists though, in fact during the very same day Russia had signed the documents adding the separatist republics into Russian regions.
