Threat of nuclear conflict is higher now than in Cold War, and a paranoid Vladimir Putin is ready to act

  1. Maybe than some points in cold war but in general no

Cuban missile crisis was one guy in a team of 3 on a submarine away from starting ww3 (by torpedoing us carrier) even without that we were hours away from ww3

During the able archer exercise in 83 the USSR thought it was pretence for war and some in command were calling for strikes. It doesn’t seem as realistic this time with the Arctic nato exercise still going ahead.

Then the petrov radar incident nearly launched a stragic response if he hadn’t double checked against standing orders. I still think strategic use of weapons (NATO/russsia destroy each other cities) is much further out.

We may be racing towards tactical nuclear more than any point in 30+ years, but there was always a danger of that in fulger gap in cold war.
