I appreciate the guy’s got a great voice, but fuck me do his songs bore me to tears. Generic shite.
I don’t like Ed Sheeran’s music. I do find it derivative.
But we really, really do not want copyright trolling to become a feature of the music industry.
Music and art are like a language, and of course you will re-use phrases that others have used. Unless it’s a blatant rip-off, there’s nothing “wrong” with re-using a lick or a short melody.
These music plagiarism cases are becoming too common, and it will make it incredibly difficult to write songs. If we used the logic of some of these cases, entire genres like the blues could have been wiped out in the beginning.
Ironically, these cases could stifle creativity and limit original expression.
