    The European Union’s top general has said the bloc should deploy troops to Greenland after Donald Trump suggested he could seize the territory.

    General Robert Brieger, the Austrian head of the bloc’s military committee, claimed the move would send a “strong signal”, as well as act as a deterrent to [Russian and Chinese activities](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/politics/2025/01/08/trumps-greenland-panama-canal-denmark-europe/).

    His comments come after Mr Trump suggested using military force to[ take over Greenland,](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/politics/2025/01/24/denmark-crisis-horrendous-phone-call-trump-buy-greenland/) an autonomous region of Denmark.

    The territory holds a military significance for Washington, with 200 American troops stationed at the Pituffik Space Base, which is part of a missile early warning system, as well as a space and satellite surveillance command hub.

  3. If I look at the naval capabilities, I have the impression that European countries can deploy troops only before a war starts. After that even delivering supplies will be extremely challenging. And in this sense, it would be a pointless war, given the quite certain endgame.

  4. Europe seems to be taking stupid decisions, it seems. The only real threat is Putin here, who’s actively invading another European country while threatening to nuke the rest and take the Baltics. Trump is trash talking to get economic concessions and a better deal, he can’t invade Greenland on a wimp, there are functioning institutions in the US (while in Russia, Putin can unilaterally decide what to do next)
