“The United Kingdom demanded in 1917 that if Greenland were to be sold then the UK should have the first right to buy it.”
lmao
Denmark has ‘first dibs’ over Canada
Lol. That’s going to really piss off the 1776 MAGA fanboys.
Hah! That’s a good one.
Let’s give it a lick of magnolia and flip it like it’s new!
DIBS! 😄
Finally someone with a sense of humor over all this madness. It is serious but it IS also quite funny 😅
Can we just advertise it, on airbnb.
This is stupid because it gives in to the assumption of the Americans that Greenland is somehow for sale. Don’t give them any ground! (Figuratively and literally)
We’ve only gone and done it again.
I don’t think any of this will happen, but I do think Trump gonna be the reason Canada, Denmark, Mexico and probs more get nukes in the next 10 years.
If it goes to anyone other than Denmark it goes to the Greenlanders. We’ve done enough colonial damage.
Sigh… An ideal case would be for the US, UK, and Denmark to collaborate on a strategic Arctic framework that enhances mutual security and development in the region without transferring sovereignty. Alas…
This is not the playground. “First dibs”. Really ???
But okay, I know who have first dib. The Inuits
Can you imaigine Inuits becoming american?
Lets ask Native Americans and American Inuits how they are treated
This is just, once again showing, they don´t care about the people
Guys, what the fk is happening. A part of me is like Trump is crazy he’ll never do anything, but then again.. it’s Trump
This was common practice during the imperial period for a wide range of territories.
It was a means of entangling our interests together (And as we see, it theoretically worked in this instance. Denmark and the UK now share an interest in telling the US to fuck off), while also preventing wars between the two, because it’s impossible to frame Denmark as being unreasonable in the standards of the imperialist era if they say;
“You can have it first if we don’t want it”.
Because much territory grabbing was moves and countermoves, the UK interest in Greenland plummets once it’s guaranteed France won’t get it, and so on. In effect it makes the territory “Safe” to have a great power have dibs on it. You’ll find a wide range of agreements like this if you go looking, mostly to the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands.
The USA is just acting irrationally even in the game of geopolitics the UK played to get the claim. Greenland is already “Denied” to its geopolitical adversaries, and the US already has military installations there, unless the US thinks the UK is a geopolitical adversary (In which case, it’s ridiculous to contest the claim in order to deny it to the UK to prevent them getting stronger, since contesting the claim already puts them in conflict with the UK).
The equivalent here might be something like the UK telling the EU “You have dibs on the British Isles if we’re done with them” purely to stop the US trying to make us the 51st state or some shit. Then if they try we can throw up our hands and say “You need to take it up with the EU, it’s out of our hands”, and the EU is a tougher nut to crack.
An example of such an agreement is Gibraltar. The UK has agreed to sell Gibraltar to Spain before anybody else. This is in part to prevent other nations trying to pressure the UK into selling it to them for its strategic usefulness. (In effect, they can only weaken the UK, not strengthen themselves. Unless it’s Spain doing it. So France attempting to get Gibraltar would draw Spain into a war with them, at least during this period. The alternative is France conspires with Spain, and if the UK wins, Spain loses its claims to the territory, which they’re likely to be cautious about.).
It’s a means of drawing up limited alliances over specific territories by technicality, with the territory as theoretical collateral to force the alliance to be honored, and preventing wars between the signatories over fear of loss of the privilege offered.
Trump however is immune to norms and diplomacy, and likely doesn’t even understand them. So what was supposed to be a mechanism to stop everybody asking to buy Greenland (Because the UK has dibs), has not worked in the first part of the mechanism (“Stop asking”), and the rest of the mechanisms are a bit superfluous in the modern era. Maybe it’ll get him to shut up, or at least divide his attention between bullying Denmark and bullying the UK, who knows.
And, what are the thoughts of the Greenlanders?…
What about the Norwegian claim on parts of the island?
Might as well bring it up, as we’re entertaining this nonsense.
Let’s start a Go fund me for the UK 😂
British Empire Uno Reverse was not on my 2025 bingo
I guess Norway has dibs on north America before anyone else then, since we we’re the first Europeans there 😜
The US has no need to take over Greenland for “national security” purposes.
Denmark is a long-standing NATO ally and an ally of the US – not an unfriendly or uncooperative nation. Denmark has allowed the US a military presence on Greenland for many years, supported the US in multiple wars and would probably not reject an increased military presence, if that is what the US wishes. So there is absolutely no need for a take-over.
Instead, the aggressive US stance will seriously undermine the trustworthiness and influence of the US among its allies, undermine NATO and thereby strengthen Russia. After all, with allies like that, who needs enemies?
The only real reason for demanding Greenland is to help Russia by undermining NATO and/or to engage in imperial expansion based on personal ego.
Guaranteed we’d turn it into a Wetherspoons.
Our prime minister is sometimes an idiot because she doesn’t have the political support to make such a statement.
No one has dibs on Greenland – We are not selling or giving Greenland and its population away, you just can’t do that, it’s a sick, very anti-Danish idea.
Mate, sacking the Chagos for Greenland would be an absolute result
I like how no one is giving a fuck about what Greenlanders want as if it were the 1890s.
Time for Trump to back down, no-one in history has ever called dibs like the UK.
Funny 🤣
I call dibs on Newfoundland on behalf of Finland.
I’m not entirely sure where it is in Canada, but it’s kinda pronounced like New Finland and I believe that gives us just as much of a right to own it as the US does to Greenland. I’m sure the Canadians will welcome their new overlords.
They had claimsies first! You can’t unclaimsies something!
Most people dont know where this Greenland obsession comes from, but the true story is somewhat shocking, and proof of the abject stupidity of the entire Party of Tre45on & Corruption.
In 2019, MAGATraitor Senator Tom Cotton received a fundraising letter from some Danish Government official purporting to represent a Greenland independence movement, claiming to have the votes of Greenland citizens to leave Greenland and join the US. Cotton showed the letter to Trump, who got all excited, and started talking about buying Greenland, because with his poor reading comprehension, he interpreted a fundraising request as an offer to sell, the big dummy.
The problem is, there was no Danish government official, the department he reoresented doesn’t exist, there is no Greenland independence movement, and there are no votes to leave Greenland, and certainly not to join the United States, which is widely regarded as a Shithole country by most of the world, thanks to MAGA.
The letter has been proven by Danish intelligence to be a Russian forgery, intended to stir up trouble between the US and our NATO allies, and Cotton and Trump fell right into it, and are still pursuing this stupid hoax, as if it’s real, which it never was.
Not finding anyone saying this, so I’ll say it: I believe that Canada should be worried about USA buying or acquiring Greenland in any other way. And they should oppose it the same way they also oppose selling themselves out.
Why? Because if USA takes hold of that territory, then Canada will be completely surrounded by them, and they will become a much easier prey.
While I don’t think we should take this up (we’ve done far too much of that in our history, imo) as a British person I think this is hilarious if it pisses off that dickhead in the White House.
We need a strong UK, France & Germany to combat this fucking lunatic.
Oh no, see what you did? This will infuriate the blond Clown
“Full crisis mode” apparently is relaxed dinner at our prime ministers home.
