Finland will need a bolstering of some 31,000 practical nurses by 2040 to come to the aid of tackling the growing challenge of an aging population putting immense pressure on the healthcare system, a recent government-commissioned report warns.

Additionally, almost 14,000 more registered nurses will be required, according to the shocking revelation, with many having to be employed in specialised care, to cope with the burdening new demands of a Finland that is rapidly growing older.

The urgent need for more professional healthcare personnel is surmounted by a reported 20,000 additional members of healthcare staff required by the end of this decade alone.

Aging population combined with a lack of healthcare solutions spells trouble for Finland

Finland is having to come to terms with the fact that not only is its demographic aging, meaning, the amount of elderly citizens needing support is looming, but the healthcare system has come under serious threat lately.

Despite a falling birth rate, the population in Finland soared by nearly 35,000 in 2024, standing now at around 5.64 million. Recent polls suggest a desperate calling for improvement to its flailing emergency services sector and healthcare department overall, with members of the public fighting for necessary change.

In 2019, Finland had around 71,000 practical nurses registered throughout its hospitals, surgeries and clinics, but this number will have to be added to exponentially over the coming years if it is to serve its people justly, and avoid serious complications.

Finnish doctors facing burn out due to hectic schedules

A recent story published by Euro Weekly News elicited that doctors and nurses across Finland are being increasingly overworked, and do not have the capacity to keep up with their hectic work schedules, leading to many feeling burned out.

This increase in daily stress makes nurses and doctors less capable of carrying out their work to the required standard, and spells trouble for citizens who expect due care of their respective health complaints.

Finland needs to attend to its ability to provide effective and efficient, instantaneous healthcare solutions to members of the public, who according to reports, are populating rapidly, due to a surge in immigration.

Numbers of those moving from overseas to the Scandinavian country are massively outpacing those emigrating from Finland.
