Brexit Fallout: Is Scotland Ready to Leave the UK?

  1. Better chance of Alex Salmond coming back from the dead.

  2. Yes. Have been since before we were ripped out against our will

  3. Ready as it’s ever been, I’m past the point of caring tbh, just end it one way or another, referendum with the choices ‘yes leave the uk’ or ‘no and make all talk of independence illegal for the next 100 years, any political party supporting it is banned and any talk of a future referendum is punishable by extradition to Rwanda’ maybe get some closure!

  4. Ready? Maybe, maybe not. But what have we got to lose at this point? It’s not like the UK has much going for it right now

  5. Can we stop committing economic self harm in the name of flag waving gobshites. Brexit and Indy supporters are included in this.

  6. Given that polls are often done by the ‘Indy at all costs’ or ‘the UK is perfect’ brigades, who are just asking their own family members half the time, I can’t tell anymore

  7. Scottish independence is inevitable & long overdue

  8. Since 2014, the amazing benefits of remaining in the UK haven’t materialised and every one of the brexit negatives have come true. I just don’t understand how anyone can look at other small European nations and think ‘Yup, we’re definitely doing better’.

  9. Is SNP ready to present a credible plan?

They’ve made a cunt of everything they’ve touched so far.

  10. Who’s going to lead leave, SNP in tatters, credibility wise and got tonked at last GE. Alba Party? And is there a real appetite?More chance of a workers revolution to overthrow the state to be honest.

  11. Most small countries in the EU benefitted from starting from a much lower socio/economic base line than Scotland.
Tho the UK is currently not in great shape the EU will most certainly not be a bowl milk and honey and currently is heading into choppy waters. Also, all Scotland would be doing is swapping one over reaching parliament for another.

  12. We’ve been told time and time again that we’d be better off in the UK. That reality has never materialised even slightly.

Whatever short-term economic hardship independence would bring, eventually we’d be better off.

  13. From an Irish person’s perspective I find it remarkable that a lot of Scots don’t seem to have confidence in their ability to manage their own affairs. If Ireland and any number of small European countries can do it why not Scotland?

I suppose with Labour in government now there’s less of an incentive to go Indy and that’s fair enough. But what if a few years down the road a radical pro-Trump, anti-EU Tory / Reform government are in power? Where will that leave Scotland? You need to be planning ahead in my opinion.

  14. The UK is in real danger. It’s caught between EU and US. Doesn’t have significant trade deals and an empire to suck resources from anymore. Expect the UK to fall further down the pan

  15. > • Is independence comparable to Brexit financially, with the main benefit being freedom, social or moral?

On trade, independence would be x3 worse to Scotland than Brexit according to an LSE study. This doesn’t take into account the loss of fiscal transfers (essentially from England) which are typically above £20 billion per annum. Nor does it take into account the cost of setting up governmental bodies. But on the other hand, yes, the benefits do include freedom for the Scottish government to make its own decisions, theoretically it could govern better and lessen the woes or ultimately improve the whole economy. Unlikely because it would probably see a £20 billion cliff to government expenditure.

    > • Is Brexit an event where now, while Independence would have or would be like Brexit, rejoining the EU negates that?

No, LSE study mentioned above includes a scenario in which Scotland joins the EU. There is only a minor improvement to the economic situation.

  16. If we let you guys give Boris the full Braveheart treatment would that help, hypothetically?

  17. Show me a credible, costed plan.

I still don’t get why Brexit gets held up as an example when the people that were supposed to implement it shat the bed as they didn’t want it. Seems backwards. If anything it’s a good indication that independence would be a more spectacular fuck up than Brexit.

  18. Genuine question: what would happen to our state pensions if we left the UK?

Edit: Downvotes for asking an honest question I’d want answered before making an informed decision. Never change r/Scotland, never change.

  19. I used to think Scotland going independent would be a great idea… until the Russian government invaded Ukraine and the complete shit show Brexit created. The world is too unstable for it to work and Scotland would become a target. It would be nice if Scotland had a wee bit more in put in things across the UK tho.

  20. What I want answered is aimed towards the unionist crowd. I get that a lot of you think indy would make things worse in the short to medium term. I get that, it’s a valid argument.

The question i want to ask is how much worse does it have to get before you realise holding on is no longer worth it. Where is the line in the sand for you? How much worse does it need to get for you? The rest of us would quite like an answer on this.

  21. The fact that they voted to remain in the EU and have to deal with the Brexit consequences…

  22. Doesn’t matter if it’s ready. It won’t ever be allowed.

  23. The great thing about brexit is that not much changed except a lot of things that got worse

  24. So just to clarify because I’m confused. Scotland’s trade with the EU is a bit worse so the way to fix it is by leaving the union in which 90% of Scotland’s trade occurs.

Yep that makes nice economic sense.

  25. I would much rather have a referendum about the whole UK rejoining the EU. We need unity in Europe more than ever.

  26. A lot of chat of deficit in this thread but the elephant in the room is that GERS (indeed utilised by the SNP) is not fit for purpose.

  27. I have to laugh at these conversations on here.

There is nothing that will change the find of a fundamental unionist, and they’ll cheerfully damn us all to Reform.

The sad thing is there are still no voters and undecideds that would see Farage as PM and think ‘well, it could be worse with Independence!’

Luckily, the demographic shift will be the deciding factor, so let’s hope Westminster doesn’t do too much more self harm in the meantime.

  28. Always find it funny when the pro Indy lot use Brexit as an example of why they should leave the UK … can they not see the irony here? Even the arguments sound like the Brexit campaigners’ at this point

  29. The sooner we can leave and rejoin the better.

It’s only a matter of time before rUK joins as well.
