  1. Oh, she hasn’t heard. Apparently, empathy is a sin now.

    Fuck this timeline.

  2. Showing empathy only gets us so far. Less feelings, more action. Use your fortune and platform for something positive or keep it moving.

  3. Are they going to after Jenna Ortega and Olivia Rodrigo next?

  4. I’m believe that people do care- but they see you, Ms Gomez, as one with more power and accessibility to resources to do more good than the average Joe Schmo down the road.

  5. I understand her feelings, but she’s a billionaire. There are at least a dozen immigration legal defense orgs in her home state of Texas that she could massively contribute to and it could be real tangible help for people. Put down the social media and get your financial manager to start writing checks, Selena.

  6. Selena: Omg don’t deport anyone!!

Immigrants: Hey can a couple of house stay in your 22nd bedroom for the night while we find a place?

    Selena: Ewwww

  7. I think a lot of people have an instinctive distrust of people who film themselves crying. It feels insincere, regardless of how noble the intentions might be. (I’ve cried on plenty of occasions, but never once have I thought “let me get the camera, the world should see this” while I did so.)

No shade towards Selena of course, but I would’ve preferred if she just gave a sober explanation of any sort of action her followers could take to help, be it donating to X charity, calling their Congressman and arguing for this or that action, joining this protest happening here or this community event happening there, etc. Providing some sort of informed, actionable advice (even if it won’t fix everything on its own) is better than just showing empathy.

  8. Another example of how out of touch the rich are with reality that she thought this would go over well.

Nobody wants to see a fucking billionaire filming themselves crying instead of using their literal mountains of money to actually do something about it. Imagine if your family member was just kidnapped at work and held god knows where for god knows how long, and then you see this performative bullshit. It would infuriate me.

  9. “Selena Gomez posted – and then deleted – a video of her sobbing over the mass deportations that have taken place in President Donald Trump’s first week back in office as part of his crackdown on illegal immigration.

“I’m sorry,” the “Emilia Perez” star said in a caption on a video she uploaded to social media Monday. A Mexican flag emoji appeared on the screen, as Gomez is of Mexican and Italian descent.

“All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand,” Gomez continue. “**I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something but I can’t**. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”

She then took to social media again with a second message on her Instagram stories, saying, “Apparently it’s not OK to show empathy for people.”

    🙄

  10. People filming themselves crying in general is just so nauseating to me, imo.

  11. stop filming yourself crying and start helping poor immigrant families with your massive pile of money. She could be running a whole village for Mexican immigrants instead of making cry videos.

  12. No….. it’s not okay to cry in front of a camera while sitting in luxury with no intent to do something to help the people you’re crying for

  13. We no longer live in a democracy. Showing signs of empathy is being woke will be met with overwhelming hostility from MAGA. The autocratic leader has emboldened MAGA to deliberately use social media to flood negative comments in an effort to silence them. This is their tactic to silence free speech and promote MAGA speech. Truth to power is under attack from the far right.

  14. I have a lot more respect for Selena than I do for many other celebrities or internet influencers, and although I can see how many people perceived this as fake, I think that it’s one of those times we can trust somebody wasn’t just using their online presence for their own gain.

  15. Haven’t seen it but if she posted a video simply crying about what’s happening it would play off as self serving more than actually trying to inform and advocate for the victims. If the video focused first on informing followed by a personal reaction it would seem a lot more sincere.

  16. When the entire world watches you and you have adoring fans all over, maybe she thought that translated to having some actual influence

  17. Fuck the backlash, what we’re doing and allowing to be done is morally and ethically wrong. It’s heartbreaking and people need to know

  18. Rather them post videos like this then another IG reel of a night out

  19. For what it’s worth, it touched me emotionally and while it saddens me to see people distraught, it is also comforting to see empathic emotions over a constant stream of online cynicism.

  20. It’s currently in fashion to be inhumane to people, one day we will all look back and go “how did everyone turn into monsters?!”

  21. People are taking this way too seriously. Selena’s video not the immigration raids

  22. We live in the new era where the government has no empathy. Look at how these sick fucks reacted to a bishop calling for mercy for the most vulnerable in our society. I’m sure there are people calling for Selena Gomez’ head for showing even a shred of vulnerability for brown people on video.

  23. Wow guys. Maybe it’s possible the content of what she was saying made her upset. Jfc

  24. Stop crying and give money. Filming yourself crying is performative and weird. You’re rich, use your money.

  25. …wait, I’ve read that somewhere…something about the sin of empathy…

  26. Show the Internet your heart and they will eviscerate it.

  27. It is ok, that’s why you leave it up and post a follow up telling people to suck your dick.
