5. To be fair it wasn’t that simple, the nuclear weapons were on Ukrainian soil, but they were controlled by the Russian military. They controlled the launch sequence and maintained operational control. There wasn’t really a scenario where Ukraine could choose to keep them

   Edit: don’t get me wrong, it would’ve been great if Ukraine had nuclear weapons or were under the NATO nuclear umbrella before the Russian invasion 2014 and 2022, but keeping those that were stuck in Ukraine in 1991 wasn’t really an option

7. This is a positioning for negotiations with the west. Ukraine doesn’t have a whole lot to offer in return for military protection but ”If you don’t help us with protection then we’ll get nukes and you’ll have a new border like the India Pakistan border between nuclear states who aren’t good friends, but in your back yard”

   It’s a convincing argument. I don’t think anyone wants this. Least of all Ukraine.

8. No kidding. The fact that Russia would have never invaded a nuclear armed country will certainly make any country more interested in protecting itself with them. I can’t imagine we’ll ever see another country give up theirs. Promises mean nothing compared to the threat of annihilation.
