Colombia avoids trade war with US as business community, citizens call for cooler heads

1. Submission Statement: Following a lot of bluster on both sides, it appears that cooler heads have prevailed. No doubt an accomplishment, considering the presence of two strongman presidents.

   Commentary: Unlike Trump, Petro has struggled to bend Colombia to his will thanks to opposition from the congress, the courts, big business, and the media. He was likely trying to show off his tough guy persona, but as the weaker party, Bogota had little choice but to back down.

2. This was a scary few hours and one that will reverberate, to the detriment of the USA. It is a clear message to smaller countries to quickly build up alternatives so they cannot be bullied similarly. For South America, that means the phone lines are burning up currently with calls to China and Europe.

3. If Petro ever spent time on Reddit and get educated by the experts we have here on the matter, he would’ve known that Trump tariffs are paid for by the American consumers and thus bad for them, thus should have doubled down and asked for 100% tariffs, instead of folding quickly.
