In a surprising turn of events that has sent shockwaves through the energy sector, worries surrounding the AI startup DeepSeek have precipitated a sharp decline in nuclear power stocks. As reported by Business Insider, the concerns are centered around DeepSeek’s potential to disrupt the AI narrative that has supported market optimism for years.
Leading the downward spiral, Nuscale Power Corp, which was one of the top-performing nuclear energy stocks in 2024, witnessed a staggering 24% drop. In a similar vein, Vistra Corp experienced a 26% plummet, with Talen Energy Corp and Constellation Energy Corporation also declining by 21% and 20%, respectively. Shares of Oklo, having gone public just last year, saw a significant dip of about 30% during early afternoon trading.
BWX Technologies, recognized for supplying nuclear energy components and clean power to the government sector, registered a 10% decrease, while Cameco Corp‘s shares fell by 9%. This steep decline marks a major setback for the nuclear power industry, which had benefitted immensely from surging energy demands propelled by AI growth in the past year.
The anticipation of increased investments in nuclear energy was fueled by soaring requirements from data centers and other infrastructures critical to AI technology. However, the recent entry of DeepSeek, offering a cheaper and less energy-intensive AI model, has upended this anticipation. According to Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, “DeepSeek is all anyone is talking about as we kick off this busy trading week.” DeepSeek’s innovations suggest a reduction in energy reliance and costs, thereby unsettling U.S. technology investors over existing high stock valuations and extensive AI expenditures.
Adding to the sector’s volatile situation is the contrast seen with the previous week, when nuclear power stocks surged following ex-President Donald Trump’s announcement of a $500 billion infrastructure initiative named “Stargate.” Despite this recent volatility, it’s notable that last year brought astronomical gains in nuclear energy stocks, with Nuscale Power soaring 493%, Vistra Corp climbing 262%, and Talen Energy advancing approximately 212%.
