Putin Open to Ukraine Talks, But Not With Zelensky

  1. Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, has expressed openness to negotiations with Ukraine, but with one critical caveat: he refuses to engage in talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In a recent statement, Putin highlighted his preference for dialogue with Ukraine’s opposition, emphasizing that Zelensky, whom he labels as a “puppet,” lacks the independence to represent the country’s interests in peace talks.

This revelation comes amid ongoing battles and escalating tensions, as Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine, now entering its second year. Despite international calls for an end to the war, Putin’s stance suggests little room for diplomatic resolution under the current leadership in Kyiv. Instead, he’s aiming to position himself as willing to negotiate—just not with the person at the helm of the Ukrainian government.

Zelensky, for his part, has consistently called for peace talks with Russia, but under conditions that ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty is preserved. However, Putin’s refusal to speak directly with him underscores the deepening rift between the two leaders and raises the question: Can any meaningful dialogue take place while both sides remain entrenched in their positions?

In this diplomatic chess game, Putin’s message is clear: he’s not willing to accept Zelensky’s authority, and the war seems set to drag on unless there’s a dramatic shift in leadership or strategy.

  2. Eventually these two lads are going to need to get into a room unless one of them dies.

I feel like Putin is slowly trying to set the scene for a end to the war, early indications from the Trump administration seem to be that actually they’re not going to be any more favourable to Russia than the last administration was. Puts Russia in a very difficult spot because Trump is talking about all out economic war against Russia to totally crash their economy.

Any talks though ultimately will involve Ukraine, Putin knows this and will eventually have to concede this and hope that Ukraine agree to get into the room.

  3. Who does he want to talk to if not for said country’s head of state ?

  4. That’s the biggest opening you can get from Putin. He won’t eat his narrative against Zelensky, he would lose face, but being open to talk indirectly is a start.

  5. Putin is showing that he does not want to negotiate.

  6. Repeating thousands of times the same lies and making impossible preconditions.

There are at least two reasons why Moscow wants Zelensky to be replaced. Whoever comes will be weaker and in meantime there will be chaos to exploit and secondly, if voting would be even possible to conduct safely, it will exclude the occupied areas and de facto legitimize the successor only on the Ukrainian controlled land while giving Moscow another excuse to claim the conquered areas.

Their official narrative is that Ukraine itself will question whatever agreement will be made because they will consider Zelensky ‘illegitimate’. As if Ukraine was breaking agreements with Moscow before and will be in a position to invade it.

  7. The last time Trump negotiated with a war torn country.. the country was overtaken by the opposition.

  8. Trump and Putin can end the war without Zelensky as follows: 1) Trump agrees that Ukraine will not be allowed to join NATO; 2) Putin agrees to withdraw his troops from Ukraine; 3) Ukraine agrees to hold elections; 4) Referenda in the East regions of Ukraine (Donbas, etc.) to determine Eastern boundary of Ukraine.

  9. So just Putin in a room alone with a sock puppet on his hand that he’s names as Ukraine’s president?
