Ukraine war may lead to rethinking of US defense of Europe

  1. >“We are in new, dangerous territory — a period of sustained tensions, military moves and countermoves, and major intermittent military crises in the Euro-Atlantic area that will ebb and flow for at least the remainder of the 2020s, if not longer,”

    Oh shit.

  2. China would certainly love it if the US had to commit more military units in Europe to counter Russia.

I would **hope** the biggest rethinking will be done by the European NATO countries themselves.

It’s way, way, way past time for Europeans to give up guilt trips of history and candyland dreams of a kumbaya world.
Will Putin’s moves in Ukraine be enough to wake up Europe so they will commit more to their own defense than just words?

  3. About time, we need our own defences and energy and resources independence.

Europe deserves more than just being split between US and Russian puppets. Ever since the [1947 crises](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_1947_crises) the US has directly interfered in European governments, and now we find ourselves entirely dependent on their LNG imports (conveniently for the US). Our natural gas and petroleum prices are far higher than the US already, and set only to increase, while we still [have lower salaries too](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median_income). It’s painful to see the threads in worldnews, etc. of Americans with 100k salaries complaining about paying less than 1 EUR per litre of petrol.

Europe paid for the refugees from the US wars (and now faces a new wave of refugees), whilst having almost no influence in Ukraine compared to the US and Russia. Remember the US state department controlling the board of Burisma and the [“Fuck the EU”](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26079957) moment under Obama? And that was before the “America First” policy under Trump – it’s clear the US is not really an ally of the EU.

We should aim for the common security and defence policy to supersede NATO, and have US bases withdrawn from Europe.

  4. Yeah it may or it may not. When the anti democrats put the orange clown into office again, Putin gets a card blanche.

  5. Oh yes, let’s not relay on them….each time everyone will be afraid of ww3 and/ir nuclear strike….So either you have billions to spend and defend yourself or you don’t and don’t even start it, no matter NATO, US or whoever tells you what. The gist of reality.

  6. Reminder to everyone that the EU is an economic alliance and NATO is a military one; they are not interchangeable. The EU doesn’t have a military lol

  7. Maybe. The thing is that containing China is a totally different kind of defense than Europe.

China is mainly contained by a massive navy, keeping see lanes open. And building a large coalition of countries that are contributing.

Europe is mainly a land defense. Stealth planes, logistics, troops, tank forces, etc.
