Britain’s immigration policy is based on nothing more intelligent than the pub bore “they come over here, take all our jobs, get given a free house and benefits….”
That’s the Tories electoral base. This is nothing more than dog whistle politics which rejects anyone coming to this country, regardless of circumstances.
A humanitarian crisis is very much secondary to keeping that electoral base onside and voting Tory at the next election.
We are governed by a party that is ultra aware they are elected by people who don’t care if parents and children drown in the channel.
That’s what this country has become.
It’s hard enough as a British citizen to bring a foreign spouse here so I can’t imagine how hard they’re making it for these folks
I was told by Home Office my wife will get a visa in 24 hours. Took nearly 12 days. I’ve got plenty of money to support us, but the vast majority of people fleeing have literally lost all of their savings (which were peanuts by UK standards), loved ones, they literally left everything behind. I was at VAC the other day and saw an 80 y.o. grandma sleeping on the floor because she’s and her daughter have been waiting there for 2 days. The staff were clueless and one of them told me “I literally don’t know what’s happening, we’re in the dark”. Bear in mind we got our visa because I have experience with this kind of stuff and access to an immigration lawyer, I know the language and understand how these processes work. Imagine what it’s like for people who don’t have the same kind of resources. A lot of these refugees have multiple degrees and are skilled workers, and UK can benefit if the Govt plays their cards right. This is just wrong.
