UK: Govt Rejects Home Office Recommendations to Change UK Extremism Definition

1. The UK Home Office has claimed that there are no plans to change the country’s definition of extremism after a leaked internal departmental report recommended expanding the term to include violent environmentalists, far-left groups, conspiracy theorists, and misogynists.

   Last updated in March 2024 by now-former minister Michael Gove, extremism is currently defined by the UK as “the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance” aiming to destroy rights and freedoms, undermine the UK’s parliamentary democracy, or create an environment to achieve either result
