Clearly one of Putins goals in pushing brexit was to affect solidarity in the EU and weaken any potential EU defence force.
Bold of you to assume Brits would exhibit solidarity in a crisis.
Absolutely, like that time we had to fly the long way round to actually make a real impact to Ukraines defence, due to Germany playing it safe.
I voted remain, and I would again tomorrow, but while the EU dithered the UK was getting the job done in Ukraine and for that I’m grateful.
Solidarity in a crisis. Like how the troika treated Greece in their financial crisis. Greece is a full member: EU, Schengen, Euro. They still got screwed.
Adults in the Room is a good read. The film version is a bit weak.
Isn’t this no sense? Isn’t UK also together with everyone else sanctioning and criticising Russia? Didn’t Boris fly to the front line having speech in that side of the region?
What complete and utter tripe. The UK, EU and NATO are more united on Ukraine than they have been on anything for decades.
This sub is turning into Brexit-anon, literally everything bad that happens to anybody worldwide is somehow blamed on Brexit. Even the vote has to be about being manipulated or misled, it can’t possibly be that most people (that could be bothered to vote) simply chose a different option.
Still crying over Brexit??? Get over it we are out!!! And thankfully too cause if this situation has shown us anything is that without the EU the UK can be affirmative with its actions, otherwise we would still be waiting for the Germans to come round.
The strategy was divide and conquer. And this has been planned since 1991 or maybe earlier. They couldn’t win the Cold War, but the could play the long game.
This is the end result – dog whistle the right wing asshats & destabilise U.K. & EU with Brexit and the US with Trump, and then take advantage of it. Get the EU reliant on Russian energy & oil, drive out the Middle East and let them fight amongst themselves. I bet Putin couldn’t believe his luck when the pandemic hit and then to make some cash before attacking Ukraine they artificially increased the cost of energy to build their reserves.
Personally I think this is probably a good thing as it’s removed our influence from the EU and I imagine enabled the strong response we’ve seen from them
Yes well that is what happens when Russia manipulates our politics and main party
This is the dumbest take yet from the guardian. The west has never been more united on Russia. Germany wouldn’t even act when they used chemical weapons on uk soil.
This is tripe, the EU might have morphed into a political body that over reaches its original mandate but thankfully it has never been part of British defence strategy.
If we had still have been in the EU, it would have tried desperately to slow us down to the German or France pace of reaction to this current situation while it meet on deciding options and generally applying the brakes when decisiveness is needed.
Being out has allow the U.K. to react with Elan and not a little leadership.
6 years and you’re still bitter about a vote that has had a negligible effect on your life. The fact it causes remainers continued misery, knowing that this is having a continued impact on their mental health, sustains me.
Weird, since we all seem to have come together with this crisis.
We’re all equally cowardly.
Reminder that Tories and their kipper/national front friends demonised Ukraine daily during their brexit campaign on behalf of Russia.
This UK sub really doesn’t seem to be very positive about the UK. At all.
Literally one of the most stupid articles I’ve ever read. Irrespective of brexit, if we had competent leadership we would be dealing with this correctly. We don’t. So if brexit didn’t happen we would still be incompetently led.
Now that Putin has Britain out of the EU, he is making threats against Britain. Crafty bugger.
What solidarity?
There hasn’t been any Solidarity in the UK since the Poll Tax Riots and even then the vastmajority of protests came from the working class with the Middle Class sneering behind their windows.
Its always been a battle between the Working class and everyone else in the UK, there has never been any Solidarity
Brexit – at least Putin and all his paid up shills are happy
This sub and the Guardian is the only place in the fucking U.K. that is not united. Never let a good crisis slip through your fingers hey. Use it to sow more division. Fucking shameful.
This has been a NATO response, or more broadly a western response, as pretty much the whole of Europe and North America has united. Regardless of affinity to NATO or the EU. The British response has fuck all to do with Brexit, and would have been virtually identical if we were still in the EU.
Zzzz… get over it ffs. Your grief will subside even if it takes another 6 years. My delight will not, every day I’m happy that we left the EU.
