The question:I took a break from the job for about seven years and have recently (about a year ago) started looking to get back into the workforce. I did a course in data analytics and have been searching for a job in related fields like IT, software tester and data analytics. What’s the best way to get my foot in the door in the Luxembourg job market?

Eric Busch’s answer: Returning to the workforce after a long career break – seven years in this case – can seem daunting. However, it’s entirely possible, especially in a dynamic job market like Luxembourg’s. The key is to adopt a proactive, targeted approach that highlights both newly acquired skills and transferable experience.

1. Networking is essential

Start by connecting with professionals in your target field. Attend local industry events, join relevant LinkedIn groups, and consider signing up for specialised networking platforms. Building relationships can uncover job opportunities that aren’t widely advertised.

2. Showcase recent skills

If you’ve completed a course in data analytics, for example, make it a central part of your professional profile. Update your LinkedIn presence and tailor your CV to emphasise how these skills can directly benefit a potential employer. This helps recruiters and hiring managers see the immediate value you bring.

3. Consider project-based roles

Short-term contracts, freelance assignments, or consulting projects are excellent ways to re-establish yourself. They offer a chance to gain recent experience, build confidence, and demonstrate your abilities in a real-world setting.

4. Leverage transferable experience

Even if you’ve been out of the workforce, your previous professional experience still matters. Highlight the skills and knowledge you developed earlier in your career, and explain how they complement your new training. Employers often value a combination of past insights and fresh skills.

By focusing on these strategies: networking, showcasing new skills, pursuing short-term roles, and leveraging past experience, you can position yourself as a strong candidate, even after a lengthy break. The Luxembourg job market is full of opportunities, and with persistence and a clear plan, you’ll be able to make a successful transition back into your field.
