  1. Lots of successful rebel actions in Africa lately. Great opportunity for a power to come in and expand their roles there. I wonder who will take the bait.

  2. Does anyone know more about the Romanian mercenary industry? 200 is a significant number, are they part of a broader international organisation like the Wagner or former Blackwater groups or are they an isolated group? 

  3. Isn’t that the group of Horatiu Potra ? It’s interesting that it’s reported by russian journals since, from what I remember, he was heading pro-russian mercenaries, and in particular, was a supporter of Calin Georgescu. Last time I head about him was when [he was arrested (then released) last month](https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2024/12/14/romanias-calin-georgescu-pictured-with-former-mercenary-investigated-for-inciting-illegal-) with weapons and list of roumanian politicians/journalists.

  4. FOR THOSE ASKING: Rwanda backed M23 “rebels” good or bad?

    VERY BAD! The M23/Rwandan military has historically been responsible for some of the worst atrocities in recent memory, and this saddens me greatly. It was absolutely disheartening to watch the Security Council meeting essentially say, “Yeah, we know Rwanda is doing all of that, but we won’t help.” Rwanda, being a contributing country to UN troops but still going ahead and killing UN troops, was simply brushed aside by the UN Security Council. A couple of points:

    1. On Monday, despite claims, Goma had not completely fallen. SADC troops of the SAMIDRC, FARDC (Congolese soldiers and Congolese volunteers) were still fighting against the M23/Rwandan forces
    Fighting had spilled over to the Rwanda causing civilian and military deaths

    2. The M23/Rwandan forces were responsible for the Mugunga refugee camp bombing: https://sadc.int/document/sadc-condemns-gruesome-attacks-m23-internally-displaced-persons-camp-eastern-drc-resulting
