  1. > “the committee recognized in a Jan. 20 ruling that denying an abortion to a child is not just a denial of choice but an imposition of pregnancy and forced motherhood that irreversibly disrupts their health, well-being and life trajectory.”

    This is good news, but is it really necessary to limit it to children? Any person being forced to have a child against their will is having their human rights violated, child or not.

  2. I can hardly wait for the flurry of sternly worded letters this will trigger.

  3. “The UN”

    Wow, it’s literally nothing with nobody actually doing anything. Just one big declarartion and patting each other on the back while having a bunch of nations that don’t care or follow it snickering their asses off in the back.

    SMH.

  4. But how is the UN gonna enforce their ruling? The article itself is aware of this;

    >The committee, however, has no enforcement ability.

    >Ecuador is heading into a general election season, with the first round of voting — including for president — scheduled for Feb. 9, creating political uncertainty in the country, including its response to the UN ruling.

    >In Nicaragua, the situation is even more complicated. Under the authoritarian regime of Daniel Ortega, the country has experienced seven years of repression.

    >It remains to be seen whether the countries will act on the committee’s ruling.

    Plus, that linked “International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights” has countries that signed/”ratified” it and are definitely not respecting the rights of individuals(like certain countries in the Middles East and Africa)

  5. In the United States, a teenage mother can make medical decisions for her child, but not for herself. It’s up to her parents to consent to an epidural, for example.

  6. Whoever’s in charge decides what our “rights” are. Everyone deserves freedom to choose though.

  7. Ya don’t suppose that’s a throw to the good ole US do ya?

  8. But they will stop short of directly criticising the religions that drive it.

  9. Ultimately it doesn’t matter what the UN says. It is a toothless organization with ever decreasing influence.
