Hi to all! We are thinking of doing a roadtrip from Greece(Athens) to Montenegro, Croatia and finally Slovenia. We have a roof top tent so we will be spending (hopefully) most of our time in nature. Wanted to ask your opinions about 3 things.
1) should we bring along our bikes and SUPs(stand up paddles) to enjoy some lakes(where you can paddle – any recommendations?) and mountains(where you can ride some trails – any recommendations?) or are there places to rent some?
2) I have found many hiking trails but we don’t have a loooot of days and would very much appreciate if you could recommend some must-do hikes.
And 3) must do nature-walks-viewpoints diving in lakes..rivers…whatever comes to your mind!

Much appreciated!!

Ps. If anyone wants to join us they are welcome!!

  1. With that setup my recommendation would be to drive in over the forests in the south of the country near the Kolpa river and cross over by Kočevje and Mount Snežnik.

And just so you know: wild camping officially is not permitted.

  2. TIL SUP is an acronym.

You can rent bikes and sups as both are very popular but bringing your own is obviously cheaper.

You can bike pretty much anywhere in Slovenia. There’s a lot of amazing trails. Depends on what you’re looking for though. If you want a mediterranean climate then do the coast, if you like alpine vibes then go to Gorenjska or Koroška. If you just want rolling hills then Štajerska, Dolenjska or Notranjska are good bets. For flatlands you want to go to Prekmurje. Just don’t go during the traffic peaks.

There’s a lot of good hikes. I’d say Triglav lakes are very worthwhile and not too difficult. Bathing in them is strictly forbidden though, stop in Bohinj, Bled or any other major lake for that. I’d recommend something in the Julian or Kamniško-Savinjske Alpine ranges. Just make sure you have the proper gear and stay on the path.

Also technically speaking camping in the woods is not allowed but you can chance it and hope to not get caught. We do it every year so eh. If you’re far away from anything chances are you’ll be fine. If you pull over to a farm and ask if you can stay on their land you should be 100% ok though. Just keep in mind the south of the country has major bear, wolf and coyote populations.

  3. Γεια σου, φίλε!

There’s a lot of opportunities in Slovenia to do all the things you’ve just described.

A question – when do you plan to do this? How much time do you plan to spend in Slovenia?

    How I would do it:

    1. Arrival at Kolpa river (Jurovski Brod, Metlika, Camp Podzemelj), next day head to Kostel and later Kočevje
    2. Central region – Ljubljana (visit the city, for nature go to Iški vintgar/soteska Pekel, if you like a challenge – tackle hill Krim with bikes for best views)
    3. Head West – Postojna cave (very touristy), Predjama castle, head to Štanjel, for hiking tours I suggest:

    a) Strada Napoleonica, Trieste (where you have to say “Trst je naš”, for good health and prosperity)

    b) WW1 hikes around Nova Gorica (Sabotin, Škabrijel, Sveta Gora, …).

    4. Drive to Tolmin & Kobarid & Bovec – amazing places to hike & bike, camp near river Soča

    5. Head to lake Bled & Bohinj (SUP)

    6. Head back to Ljubljana

    Καλή επιτυχία!
