400 people on minimum wage is 9.6m so her taking a pay cut isn’t going to solve anything
I never like to see layoffs at universities, but I also never really feel like a senior leader’s salary has much scope to change the scale of, or need for, layoffs. Her entire salary covers a fraction of the savings each university in this position needs to be making. It’s, what, the jobs of half-a-dozen lecturers? VC pay is not the issue here.
If the Vice Chancellor gave up their entire salary they could pay those employees the princely sum of £725 each
I get that broadly across the sector there is a conversation to be had about pay inequality, but when staff are getting laid off in bulk I think there are more significant factors than the pay of the top brass
What’s with the UK and demonising people on high salaries. Is it because we make so little?
If you are at the top it’s better others lose their jobs than you lose your income and benefits. When the times are right it is then easier to rehire, but not so easy to get your payscale back to where it was if you were to take an altruistic reduction in income. If you carry on doing the same job people will believe you are accepting that permanently and have unwittingly for a false cause , devalued yourself and the position.
Morality is always defined by those in power. Old age and greed will always overcome youth and talent.
Great, if she wanted to pay them £20k, the number would have been 385.
STOP GENERATING CONTROVERSY JUST BECAUSE
They’re proposing dropping nursing courses.
Still keeping archeology and Welsh language though. So we will have plenty of knowledge of dead people/things but less nurses to look after the living.
On a positive note there’ll be more people who can speak Welsh to apologise in Welsh that there’s no fucking nurses.
That’s a low salary of a VC.
Written by Lauran O’Toole who was apparently once trainee journalist of the year but now writes nothing but clickbait for the Express.
This is not journalism. No investigation just a churn of a story.
Doesn’t seem a lot for a job that large tbh.
Presumably the Daily Express will be demanding the CEOs of Tesco and Sainsbury’s (cutting 400 and 3000 jobs respectively) do the same?
Should we let the state set salaries and have a much smaller difference between skilled and unskilled salaries?
Because that’s basically communism. I hate unjustified ridiculous salaries that are ridiculously overinflated, but 290k for a professor who is running a massive university isn’t astronomical or unjustified.
If establishments are no longer competitive or profitable then let them die. Supply only exists if there’s demand. Frankly cutting her salary in half would fund 3 lecturers, and I doubt that’s the scale of the issue.
So we blame the immigrants again, right?
Crab bucket mentality. Cardiffs chancellor is paid a standard salary for someone in that position. Whether we like to think of it or not, she is essentially a CEO of a business enterprise; high responsibility demands a high wage. The situation at Cardiff is dreadful; I’m truly scared where UK academia will end up. However, her salary should not merit discussion.
A VC is basically a boss of a company. Cardiff University has about 7000 members of staff and over 30,000 students. So the boss of a company of 37,000 people that needs to be looked after.
So £300,000 isn’t really a lot and cutting her salary by half might not even save the jobs of two lecturers.
A quick Google suggests that the average salary at Cardiff university is £36k. This isn’t even a 10x multiplier for their most senior role. I think we can ignore this and move on.
That’s what happens when they spent all their resources and setup the university to chase foreign students who pay 4x fees. As a local to Cardiff Uni, I know people who have been in classes that are 95% Chinese. They made this rod for their own backs and now they are paying the price for foreign student clamp downs.
Vice chancellors should not be paid more than the PM. The Student loan tuition fees were meant for Unis to improve, not pay exorbitant sums of money to deans and chancellors.
*Fury as….* clickbait
Be prepared for much more of this as international student admissions are curbed
