The French Committee for a Democratic Iran has issued an urgent call to prevent the imminent execution of two Iranian political prisoners, Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani. The committee expressed deep concern over the sudden transfer of the prisoners from Tehran’s Evin Prison to Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj on January 26, 2025. This move, often a precursor to execution, has alarmed human rights advocates worldwide.

Behrouz Ehsani, 70, a former political prisoner from the 1980s, and Mehdi Hassani, 48, a father of three, were arrested in 2022 and sentenced to death on September 16, 2024, by Iran’s Revolutionary Court on fabricated charges of “moharebeh” (enmity against God) and “efsad-e-fel-arz” (corruption on earth). Despite international outcry over their unjust imprisonment, the regime’s Supreme Court upheld the death sentences on January 7, 2025.

Amnesty International has condemned these sentences as politically motivated and called for their immediate annulment. The organization highlights the prisoners’ alleged ties to the Iranian opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), as a pretext used by the regime to justify their execution. Additionally, the European Parliament has denounced the systemic human rights violations by the Iranian regime and continues to push for the abolition of the death penalty.

The inhumane transfer of Ehsani and Hassani provoked a swift reaction from fellow inmates in Evin Prison’s Ward 4, who demonstrated their solidarity by chanting anti-regime slogans, including “Death to the dictator” and “If you execute them, we will rise.” This protest underscores the growing resistance against the Iranian regime’s brutal suppression of dissent.

The French Committee for a Democratic Iran is urging the French government and international organizations to employ all diplomatic channels to halt the executions. The committee warns that time is critical and stresses the necessity of immediate awareness campaigns and pressure on the Iranian authorities. It also calls on European institutions to impose targeted sanctions against the regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other officials responsible for this blatant human rights violation.

“Silence in the face of such a grave violation of human rights is unacceptable. Every hour counts in the fight to save these individuals,” said Jean-Pierre Brard, President of the French Committee for a Democratic Iran.
