I’ve been talking a lot to a couple of Russian friends lately and it’s just so, so sad.
The reality, the vast majority of Russians are just normal people with jobs, families, friends, hobbies and all the other things we do. Russia and the UK have a long, shared history together. While Russia has never exactly been the most open of countries, Russia is a major player in many areas of world society like sport and academia. The Russian diaspora is huge and well-integrated all over the world.
I think we have to be so careful to be specific in referring to Putin and his cronies, and similarly our own government is complicit in this – this is a hard truth we have to face. Corrupt and despotic Putin is, our leadership have, for many years, happily taken money from him (or rather from people close to him, through convenient loopholes that have been left open).
This did not cause the war and it would be disingenuous to suggest otherwise, but the idea that we are suddenly taking a ‘hard’ stance on Russia right now is just nonsense. The UK (and indeed wider EU/Nato) leadership has known exactly what the Russian leadership is like and what it’s capable of, and done precious little to tackle it.
What I don’t want to see is Russophobic attacks. I’m seeing comments all over the place calling for us to wipe Russia off the map, and that hurts to read. We should never be poisoned against the people, but instead target those who are actually responsible.
Perhaps we should have told them the same thing after they used an indiscriminate weapon of mass destruction in Salisbury to try to kill just two people.
