As with most homes, we’re re-evaluating what we’re paying for electricity at home.

We moved into a new home just over a year ago and just went with Panda power as they were the default provider in our estate and do the bins.

I’ve had a look at [Bonkers.ie](https://Bonkers.ie), and apparently we could save around €1200 per year by switching to another provider (airtricity, electric ireland among others)

Our electricity seems to have gone from around .19 per kwh last year, to .33 per kwh on latest bill with Panda.

This seems like a no-brainer, but also maybe too good to be true? It just seems so pointless/ inefficient that there’s multiple providers selling exactly the same thing at wildly different prices to the same customer base…

Just wondering what other people’s experiences are, any hidden costs to switching?

  1. Anyone that doesn’t switch the second their new customer discount ends deserves the high bills that they subsequently get

  2. Always worth switching, the discount is off the standard rate, they can change the standard rate, but you still get a discount.

Only suckers are on the standard rate.

  3. You should look at changing suppliers every year. It’s easy to do and will save you anything up to €1k or more per year. I have a reminder on Outlook every year and look at who has the best new business rates on bonkers.ie. All you need is your MPRN and direct debit details and a meter reading, they’ll do the rest.

  4. Change EVERY single year, the *hidden cost* to switching is your time, but if you spend 2 hours sorting this, you could save hundreds of euro.

Get the three cheapest prices/best offers you can. When you have the best one, call the other two and tell them what the offer is, and ask them to beat it or match it. Repeat this until you get a final offer.

Irish people tend to think “ohh I’m a loyal customer – that should be rewarded”, when the reality is that the company recognises that those people will pay more while remaining a customer.

  5. There was a lad on Claire Byrne Live who said you’ll always get a better deal when switching providers, because if it’s not cheaper you won’t switch…
