  1. SS: Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso first announced their decision to leave ECOWAS in early 2024

The three military-led West African nations – Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso – have officially withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The reason can be traced back to the military coup that took place in all 3 nations in early 2024. ECOWAS promptly decided to sanction the 3 nations in hopes of bringing the democratic leadership back; but this raised tensions amongst the bloc as the military junta stated that it was ECOWAS’s lack of assistance in dealing with terrorism that compelled the military to organise a coup. The 3 nations further added that the sanctions have now hurt their citizens which has caused the 3 nations to leave the bloc.

ECOWAS did withdraw the sanctions hoping to keep the 3 nations as they do constitute 50% of land area but were unsuccessful.

  2. At the time, there was also talk of Nigeria, being the most populous member of ECOWAS, to lead a military alliance against the new military dictatorships.

If Russia loses the ability to support its geopolitical goals in the Sahel, is there a chance that the military dictatorships might fail?
