Holy…
As has been said many times before : the middle class caries the load.
If the lady only has €200 for food she has insane expenses that she can’t cut.
“Just rent a cheaper place” isn’t even an option in this market.
I’d love to see a detailed breakdown of her costs. Where does all that money go? The article is pretty vague about it. Does she rent a house for 1000+/month? Or a car with monthly payments? Or debts from the past? It seems weird to pay 1800 euro’s on fixed costs. I know that could be the case for a month or two a year (when the yearly bills come in), but every month? If it really was that bad, shouldn’t she be getting support from the father?
People jumping to her being bad with money: don’t forget that a therapist for your kid can cost 60 per session, after and pre school care for kids can also tack on, a rented place with bad insulation or devices also adds up. Even gas prizes have risen.
Sure, it’s her fault for not being able to use money wisely. /S
Things happen, kids cost alot of money, a car, gas, everything. As a single parent it’s probably twice as hard. You don’t want to deny your child that cookie or a toy or book or things for school.
I’m single with partner and a dog. The dog costs alot of money let alone a kid.
People who think it’s her fault have never been in her situation.
Okay, the people here saying that ‘it’s crazy she doesn’t make it with her money’ are completely delusional.
Let’s say she rents for 750 – 850 a month, which in a city is considered ‘cheap’ these days. In Mechelen/Antwerp that got me a 1 bedroom app.

Car + gas
Insurances for home
Insurances for car
Insurance medical (CM etc)
School costs
Food and other necessary purchases
Medical expenses
Recreational expenses
Phone, internet and tv subscription (yes these are not considered a luxery but a necessity)
Yes… it’s normal 2000 doesn’t cover it. Anyone who says differently can explain to me how they devide their paycheck monthly.
I can only speak for myself. Nearly 20 years ago I was able to make it work financially to buy an 2 bedroom appartement in Brussels that at that time was rented out for 450 euro a month. Now would that be at least 850 euro , easy in the 1000 euro a month. That makes all the difference for me financially. Paying such a rent would be very difficult for me. Affordable housing is key.
“De laatste tijd hoor ik ook van gezinnen met tweeverdieners dat ze het moeilijk hebben om rond te komen”
How?
We do on 2400 + 130€ maaltijdcheques met een kind.
It’s so disgusting to see people trying to pretend like this is her fault entirely, as if price increases haven’t been absolutely insane and wages haven’t been stagnating relative to productivity.
I make 2000 a month, and I’m single. If I count my vaste kosten, I come to 1300 euros, 200 euros in savings and then 500 euros to spend on clothes, gigs etc. I easily can see why a single mother can’t live on 2000. Hell, I could use another 500 a month.
This is super sad.
She’s earning good money, but guessing she’s living in neighbourhood that’s expensive. Sad man. Ugh I hate this inflation, these constants ‘once in a life time crises’ were going through.
