Prince Charles Cinema: Has London’s “meanest landlord” met his match?

  1. I want this guy to take his money and fuck off somewhere else. I want the Mayor to come up with a by law that protects institutions such as this cinema from greedy landlords like this guy. I have never been to a film at the Prince Charles but have always wanted to go.

  2. As much as this guy is a prick, public pressure doesn’t necessarily change much if this guy is willing to weather it.

We should try though, something being potentially futile doesn’t make it pointless.

  3. He looks like a plasticine reconstruction of Richard III. An obviously evil man.

Doubt Khan will ride to the rescue but we can look forward to him grandstanding about Trump on Twitter.

  4. Imagine if his “match” might be some sort of regulation or planning process that’d protect things like the Prince Charles from being turned into flats, by way perhaps of some office of the London Assembly or Mayoralty? Something a bit like a night czar, perhaps?

I don’t really buy it that he’s “met his match” with several months of bad publicity before he makes a fantastic amount of cash.

  5. Sick to bastard death of London being enshittified by landlords screwing every last penny out of their investment simply because they can. And then acting like there’s zero fucking choice in the matter.

The market is just self-propelling bullshit. There’s simply no argument that it’s for the good of everyone as a whole.

  6. I have friends from New York who are big cinema fans, and they visit PCC every time they come to London because it’s a true institution.

People talk about British culture dying, often in reference to some rose tinted Caucasian version of the 50’s – Cinema is an enormous cornerstone of British culture which we simply have to treat as such. So many of the great, actors, directors, writers, studios etc are British. We’re lucky enough to have the majority of large film release, old and new, in our mother tongue; we love films as a nation (all of us, regardless of ethnic or societal background) and we should take enormous pride in the opportunity to grow and celebrate that love rather than leave it in the past.

  7. This guy is the definition of what is wrong with the entire property market in the UK

  8. I’ve met him on a project around there that never happened. he owns half of Leicester square. and is quite a piece of work.

I can never quite figure out the impulse to own so much property in such a small area.. I mean go and build something in the Caribbean.. enjoy yourself (and hedge your bets)

  9. Anyone knows what would happen if they are pushed out? Would they reopen somewhere else?

  10. Am I understanding correctly that Asif Aziz is also the man who ruined Trocadero Arcade and is closing the world’s first YMCA?

The Prince Charles Cinema needs protecting. Enough is enough. Trocadero should’ve been protected more. It should never have reached this point.

Wealthy foreign billionaires shouldn’t be taking away longstanding culturally relevant buildings like this at all.

The government or Mayor needs to step in to keep the Prince Charles Cinema safe.

  11. I wish there was a way to pool together (including directors/actors who love the cinema like Quentin Tarantino) and just buy the fucking building

Wish someone in the know could get the word out to enough British actors/directors/etc

  12. What’s the fucking point in having a mayor if instead of protecting unique cultural spaces, the only thing he does is concern-post about Trump and talk about how great we are?

  13. Public parks, public healthcare, sport facilities in open areas in London, libraries. The free market doesn’t come up with these as they are not profitable (even if paid in any reasonable way). It needs to be the state or local authorities to support some activities that are needed or valuable that the free market would not provide. A cinema like this in such prime location will hardly be as profitable as other activities in that space (or residences). Vilifying every owner won’t work, there will always be another one, their purpose is profit, it’s literally what they see is their job (minus some kind ones doing charity etc). Certain activities need state support in law or council rules and in contributions as they cannot compete otherwise (eg not giving planning permission to anything but that cinema or a similar one in that location)

  14. Turning buildings into hotels with no windows. Holy hell.

I can imagine that’s only viable in London because tourists would come and only use the hotel as a place to sleep

  15. Of the rare times I visit London, this place is one of the main reasons. I can’t imagine making it out to the city often if this goes 🙁

  16. Council needs to step in and mandate that whatever this bastard builds on top of the PCC has to be 100% social housing. Would get him to back down then as he won’t be able to make as much money from it.
