It is no coincidence that **in the Ashcroft polling, only one nation had a majority of Ukrainian citizens saying they felt they had supported them enough, Britain.** We have made plenty of mistakes in the past, not least with corrupt Russian money buying up our capitals real estate, and possibly minor political influence.
With this said, however, for anyone thinking Britain has somehow left Ukraine high and dry, as Reddit posts recently have tried to suggest, there’s plenty of evidence to the contrary. After the 2014 Russian invasion of Ukraine, when most of Europe didn’t care at all, we sent troops, anti tank weapons and provided training for years. We helped and defended the sovereignty and democracy of Ukraine when it wasn’t politically fashionable, and when there was no positive PR to be gained
A month or two before the current conflict, when Germany was saying NS2 would go ahead because it’s a commercial deal, and they wouldn’t send anything but helmets, we were sending weapons to Ukraine while having to divert around German airspace, as Germany would’ve prevented us. When Italy and Germany were fighting to keep Russia in Swift, and against curtailing Russian energy imports, we were aggressively pushing the opposite stance.
While Germany (and a dozen others) have been dodging its military spending obligations for decades and letting Europe fragment and grow vulnerable, while forcing a reliance on Russian gas, needlessly, we were hitting our NATO pledged spending target and curtailing Russian gas consumption. We’ve fucked up a lot of things, but the polls speak for themselves.
