  2. The problem with this approach is that a lot of the US’s value depends on their international influence.

    By slowly cutting the US off from the world, it may have some short term gains, but also some long term harms.

    With some countries, like China, it is just about levelling the playing field and quite reasonable, but with Mexico, Canada and most of the rest of the world it’s just not a sensible plan.

  4. BRICS currency is more noise and less substance.

    The original five cannot agree on anything. Now the expanded ten is equal to herding cats. There was never a chance of a common currency coming out of BRICS. Maybe China can call the side, but even they refuse to let their RMB free float.

  14. There’s no BRICS currency coming, no matter what anyone says. It took the EURO nearly 40 years to come into existence, and the member countries were close politically and geographically. On top of it, it only came to existence when the two largest economies took the plunge first, and they were close allies (France and Germany). For BRICS to launch a currency, there are two main obstacles that IMO are equally insurmountable. First, China and India would have to agree to a joint currency and an independent monetary policy, which is laughable in the current geopolitical climate. The other, equally impossible obstacle is for China to free-float it’s currency. RMB is loosely pegged to USD in a trading band in order to keep exports profitable. They would have to free float their currency, which would immediately appreciate, making their exports more expensive. It’s a non-starter for both, nevermind getting Brasil or Iran to buy in. The economies are so different, that having a unified monetary policy would be a shit show.

    Having said all that, the only way it could actually happen is if Trump manages to destroy the USD, which seems plausible at this point.

  23. This has been the plan. Trump is working for the Russians to destabilize the US so much that the dollar standard would be dropped, effectively ending US influence.

  24. China is making inroads in the Mexican auto sector, they will do the same in Canada if Trump cripples the auto sector. And right now throwing a stick into the forks on a struggling auto industry can bankrupt manufacturers. Even the Japanese & Koreans are worried about China.

    Didn’t help that NA and EU companies exported manufacturers knowhow to China in the first place. This was short sighted greed that will cause king term suffering.

  28. This always comes as a shock to people, but the US is the least trade dependant country on earth.  Literally only Sudan is lower on the list. For the last thirty years the US has paid to maintain global trade but hasn’t gone all in to profit from it like others have.  That’s why the US is always a leg up in trade wars and why we get to pick the ones which happen.

    There is no point in being the world’s reserve currency if you aren’t going to use it to your advantage.  Weapons are useless if you don’t use them to defend yourself.
