The pediatrician charges 160 euros for the vaccine, although it is ultimately reimbursed by the health insurance.

Is this a lot for the vaccine and why isn't it on the list to go directly to insurance? Are pediatricians using the situation? Just curious.

  1. Which meningokokken vaccination and for whom? IIRC the health insurance will cover the cost for children or if there is a higher risk. They will only cover it if it happens until a certain age. For example TK will cover the C type until the age of 18. But A, C, Y and W135 only until the age of 5.

  2. Do you have private insurance? The statutory health insurance companies usually cover the amount. As the vaccination is recommended by the Stiko. We sent the invoice to our health insurance company and got the money back.

  3. I had the same issue with this. The pediatrician told me that this is due to the fact that one meningococcal vaccine was only recently added to the list of recommended vaccines. Therefore it could not yet be billed directly to the insurance using the Gesundheitskarte. However this seems to be an issue in only a few federal states according to this website https://www.meningitis-bewegt.de/kostenuebernahme/#Meningokokken-B-Impfung (german).

  4. Re: price – the standard price is set to around €150, so your quote seems about right.

The STIKO (Standing Committee on Vaccination) recently updated the MenB vaccination guidelines, recommending it for children 2 months and up.

Costs are automatically reembursed for MenB vaccinations for children between 2 months and 5 years (the recommended vaccination age range). How this is reembursed differs according to you health insurance provider and Bundesland – for many it’s automatically taken care of.

The MenC vaccination is also payed for by all health insurers up to the age of 18.

Is it a lot for this vaccine? It depends. Yes it’s a lot because I’m used to paying nothing for them (or very little if it’s something that’s not explicitly covered). But on the other hand, both the vaccines are paid for by health insurers. If you Google the price in other countries you can see that they are very similar.

Pediatricians don’t earn money with this – it’s the pharmaceutical companies that make money from the insurance companies.

  5. I’m not sure if I fully understand your post, but I’ll try.
I’ve state insurance, we wanted to vaccinate our kid (2yo) against meningococcal B. At the time of the first dose, this vaccination wasn’t covered by the insurance, so we went personally to the pharmacy (with pediatrician Überweisung) and bough the dose (around 110 Euro, December 2023).
By the time the kid got the second dose, the insurance was covering the cost and the procedure was exactly the same.
We got the Überweisung and went to pharmacy to pay for it (around 120 euro).
Third dose (November 2024)same procedure, just a bit more expensive, but not close to 160.

Now, I don’t know if in your region maybe the vaccination is more expensive, or if your dr is taking some extra money from it. 😅
