This is literal outright fake news

On the numbers:

You can compare the EU and UK sanctions lists, either through (the alleged source) Bloomberg’s up-to-date summary of both, or through the source lists of sanctioned individuals and entities published directly by the EU and UK. Both have sanctioned hundreds and hundreds of entities, and there’s huge overlap between the two lists. Anyone pretending one is 30x larger than the other is outright lying:

On the UK being the vanguard:

The article ignores areas where the UK has demonstrably been a leader, such as campaigning for Russia to be ejected from Swift, cutting Russia off from Interpol, arming Ukraine with defensive weapons, banning Russian government and companies from raising capital in the UK etc. etc.

And lastly, on the actual source of the chart the article is based on:

If you follow the trail looking for the source, you’ll go “the London Economic” -> Some rando on Twitter re-tweeting an old chart from Bloomberg -> An old Bloomberg live blog putting up data from a compliance firm helping people avoid sanctioned entities -> The current version of the same live blog that now has the chart removed, and a footnote:

>(Corrects to remove chart that inaccurately described U.K. sanctions.)

This is disclaimed as fake news directly at the source

“Bloomberg tweet is incorrect, they’ve subsequently apologised and taken down the graphs. UK has sanctioned 228 individuals, entities & subsidiaries since invasion.”

  1. The whole thing smacks of misinformation. The media are trying to stoke the fire to get us all fired up so we send our armies in to deal with the Russians. The media right now has a literal hard on for WW3.

  2. Also even the US doesn’t tend to issue sanctions unilaterally, because they don’t work, it tries to coordinate with allies. Which is why US, UK and EU sanctions will be broadly similar, if the UK’s were radically different, partners would be asking why.

  3. Weird how the “UK bad EU good” crowd are resorting to fake news to keep up their narrative

Both the UK and EU have shown unity and responded very well to the current situation in my opinion, each could have done some things better but overall so far have done a good job. It’s actually quite reassuring

  4. Yeah, I was really surprised by lack of reaction to the chart. Right now there is big gap between US/UK/EU sanctions and Chinese/Indian sanctions (or lack of it). So there are lot of articles on how Russia could keep its economy up or mitigate impact of sanctions through China/India.

But no one made such claim about Russia maintaining access through the UK. I’m pretty sure US and EU would not like their people to suffer from sanctions while UK makes money off it.

  5. Basically anything that tries to tie a current wedge issue (EU vs UK, USA is a diminishing power, blm and racism, trans issues, intergenerational inequality etc) to the conflict on Ukraine at the moment should be treated skepticalky. Peak disinformation territory, theres a lot of it starting to knock about too.

  6. I couldn’t give a shit about what other countries are doing, I care about what we are doing and its crystal clear thr Tories are giving their Putin Supporting mates every chance to gtfo with all their assets and money.

Not one single Russian who has donated money to the Tories had had sanctions placed against them.

This is what we should be concerned with, not having a dick measuring costent

  7. To be fair they might have issued 27 times more sanctions as the EU are twenty seven countries and the U.K. is one country. So stands to reason they have twenty seven more people per capita to sanction than the U.K.

  8. Might be a war with innocents dying, but never a bad time for people to push their lies and agendas bRiTaIn bad hur de dur

  9. I’d also add the nonsense about the U.K. not taking it’s fair share of refugees. Four million are expected to flee the Ukraine and the U.K. has said that at least 200,000 are welcome here. That’s more per country than the EU will take, by some margin, if it comes to fruition.

  10. Also, regardless of whether you think a countries sanctions are sufficient or not, it’s a bit silly to count the number of sanctions.

Like, a guy with 20 parking tickets is not being punished more harshly than a guy with a single life sentence. (And it’s also possible for a person to have multiple life sentences against a single parking ticket).

  11. This should be stickied so that the people who upvoted the original post can be made aware that they fell for disinformation.

  12. Can we also stop with all the ‘who did what better than who’-shit. Sowing division between western partners (UK-EU-US) is only helping Putin. Stop making a fucking contest out of it and close the ranks

  13. Funny how Redditors who never gave a tuppeny fuck about “disinformation” for years (and in fact regularly have a little sneer about it in their safe space) are now suddenly bent out of shape when public perception is wondering about Tories trousering money from Russian donors.

Make sure to look at the squirrel, everyone.

  14. Standard:

In a statement, spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Russia won’t forget the UK’s cooperation with Kyiv, or with what she calls the “ultra-nationalist forces of Ukraine”, Russian media- reported.

She also criticised tough sanctions imposed on Russia by the UK government.

“The sanctions hysteria in which London plays one of the leading, if not the main, roles, leaves us no choice but to take proportionately tough retaliatory measures,” she said.

Ms Zakharova added that British interests in Russia would be “undermined” by Moscow’s response.

  15. Its Reddit, incorrect information gets upvoted to the top and reposted every single day and has done for years.

people like to laugh about misinformation in Russia but the same thing is happening here – Reddit is a great platform for it.

    FACT CHECK people.

  16. I’ve been really disappointed with the coverage and narratives of this conflict. Day 1 was praising the resiliance of the Ukrainian people. Theres been next to no news on whats happening in Eastern Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk. This obsession with sanctioning oligarchs. Making out that its a Tory problem, when Labour welcomed the super rich between 1997-2010.

  17. Got to wait 30 days for those dear Oligarchs to pull their money out of the UK before anything. It’s not like the cunts are funding anything here… like the ruling political party?

  18. There’s a page on fb to rejoin the eu.

They simply say to really irk putin we should rejoin the eu in a show of solidarity. We will also get xyz benefits.

Lost my shit with that page today that some people use the suffering in Ukraine to push their own agenda.

As much as an advocate for rejoining. There is a time and place

  19. From what little politics I follow and watch, it was nice to see “some” unity in Parliament between parties.

Shame there’s people online still playing the “yeah but my dicks bigger”.

  20. thelondoneconomic is a real shitrag. It gets too much traction here because it’s of the left, but they always start with “toriesbad” and by hook or by crook work backwards from that position to relate it to things going on.

  21. Yeah, but your government did give the Russian oligarchs some extra time to sell all their British assets (like houses) BEFORE imposing those sanctions. The EU is doing much more against Russia than the UK, don’t go around acting all high and mighty.

  22. Yet you leave loopholes open so the Russians can move their money out. Face it. You have voted for a government owned by Russia. Britain has wrecked itself for these oligarchs and it’s pathetic. No saving face.

  23. Looks like Mastercard, Visa, Paypal and things like Patreon and YouTube payments aren’t working in Russia.

So is the plan to screw all Russians over? I’m wondering who exactly they’re targeting and what the end goal is?
