The University of Texas at Arlington asked students and faculty to evacuate the Continuing Education building for about an hour on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 30, because of a fire at a natural gas well site on campus.
UT Arlington sent an alert about 4:45 p.m. to evacuate the building at 140 W. Mitchell St. About six minutes later, the university said the fire was under control but that everyone should continue to stay away from the area.
UTA sent an all clear message about 5:40 p.m. and said that the fire was out.
The Arlington Fire Department said in a social media post that the fire involved an air compressor inside a small wooden shed at the gas well pad site on campus.
“The gas well itself was not involved but was shut off as a precautionary measure,” the department said. “Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the fire was swiftly brought under control. The incident’s cause is currently under investigation.”
