I was so intrigued with these buildings in Rotermann Quarter when I first visited Tallinn. It seems like a great juxtaposition of old and new – a way to pay homage to tradition while adapting for the future. I'm curious, what do locals think about it?

  1. Not great and not terrible. Good that they don’t raze old buildings. But I hate the rusty metal decor. Also hate stupid energy saving lets make the building dark hack. This isn’t Mordor.

  2. Okay place to go shopping, terrible place to live. Pretty much every apartment has windows straight into another building that’s so close that you could climb on over if you wanted to.

Visually I appreciate the concept, but I feel that they were too greedy, especially in Rotermann. They built as densely as they were legally allowed to build and it definitely shows.

  3. it’s weird enough to look ok from outside. I have no idea what’s it like inside, only been to the ground level stores.

  4. I’m glad that Sõõrumaa was smart enough to leave design decisions to experts.

Unlike with the golden gate building.

  5. I like them. Most of them are repurposed manufacturing buildings which would otherwise be leveled completely, but this way those stone walls get a new life.
