Maka Botchorishvili, the Georgian Foreign Minister and Gareth Ward, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the country, on Friday discussed the “current developments” in Georgia, the Ministry said.
Botchorishvili emphasised the importance of an “objective and impartial” assessment of ongoing events, including “provocative and violent actions by certain forces” both during the protest rallies against the Government’s decision last year not to include accession talks with the European Union in its agenda until 2028, and generally, in “political processes”.
The discussion also touched on the individuals arrested for “various violations” during the public protests, with the Foreign Minister noting the law enforcement authorities were “responding appropriately to such facts”.
“The process [response to such facts] is transparent, the rights of the detainees are protected, and constant medical supervision is being carried out on those who resort to extreme forms of protest”, the Minister said.
The officials also reviewed the Georgian side’s cooperation with international organisations in regard to the current processes in the country, with the Minister stressing the country was in “active communication with all interested parties and immediately shared full information about the ongoing events”.
The Ambassador was provided with information regarding the measures taken by Georgia in response to a questionnaire from 38 member states of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe “in the hope that the shared information will assist the OSCE institutions and participating states in a thorough and objective assessment of the situation”, the body said.
The parties also discussed the bilateral relations between the countries and emphasised the “UK’s recent actions taken towards Georgia”, which, considering “the traditionally friendly ties”, “unfortunately do not contribute to the positive agenda of the existing relations”, the Ministry added.
The diplomats also hoped “the relationship between Georgia and the United Kingdom will return to its usual dynamics”.
