Students learned how to identify the various mental health challenges, possible causes, and a 5-step action plan to help.
The training also addressed mental-health stigma, resources, and getting help from trusted adults.
The district peer leaders are representatives of the schools’ Wellness Centers and will help plan mental health activities and events throughout the school year.
The students were selected by Wellness Center staff Aaron Meloncon from Delta, Angela Collins and Izzy Hernandez from Pioneer Valley, Lorene Cowell and Luke Wilson from Righetti, and Mayte Olivera and Margarita Guillen-Franco from Santa Maria.
“The presenter was very energetic and passionate which made it easier to learn about serious topics,” said Jay Dolores, president of PVHS’ SHARe & Care Club. “I feel very prepared to help a friend who is experiencing a mental health challenge.”
“I already used the 5-step tMHFA action plan with a friend from seventh period,” said Nayeli Munguia, secretary of PVHS’ SHARe & Care Club. “I knew I would be helping my friends, but didn’t think I would need it right away after the training.”
Angela Collins, crisis intervention consultant at the PVHS Wellness Center said, “Teens often confide in their friends when they are having personal problems or are in crisis.
“The peer leaders can recognize warning signs, offer support and understanding, and will be able to help their friends by connecting them with a trusted adult. Overall, the peer leaders will know how to be a better friend.’’
