  1. Canadians repeatedly told him no but Trump and his friends never understood the concept of consent so I’m not surprised.

  2. That’s one big f’in state. At least split it up into multiple states…

  3. It’s crazy to think that Canada has always done the US’ bidding, said yes to everything, even arrested the Huawei CFO on American orders, and this what they get in return

  4. He will regret it once he starts having to deal with quebec.

  5. I wonder how many concessions the threat of a tariff could have earned, if it had first been used as a negotiating tool?

  6. As a Canadian, I am wondering how much PCP Trump is smoking. Canada is literally just a better country than the US in nearly every way, and especially right now.

The US political and social order looks like it is dissolving before our eyes. Utterly delusional to think anyone would want to join their clownshow now. They can’t even govern themselves.

Sad to see the United States become such a ridiculous, pathetic country.

  7. It is an insane idea, a 51st state. Let’s just assume it happened. No shots fired, but still a bitter join: the Republicans just added another set of Californians and the GOP never wins again.

Assuming Canadians can even vote in a fascist state, but I am just presenting this as a thought experiment. Whatever were to happen, since Canadians really aren’t Americans, this welding of societies would find America liberalized by such an addition. Could work in reverse, too, but it’s amazing how hardball takeovers generate generational animosity and national self-realization.

For instance, Ukraine has never been more Ukrainian than now–now they have record unity of purpose and common humanity. Or closer to home, Americans were never more American than during their Revolution.

  8. Oh. Right. In all the speculation It’s become clear- this is what the purpose of the tariffs are. It’s the only thing that makes sense now.

  9. The fact that journos are still repeating this headline because it grabs people leaves me worried for journalistic integrity in the United States and the remainder of the Global West

  10. If you told me 1 year ago we will see trade war between Canada mexico and the US i would have laughed at you’re face

  11. If we can pretend this isn’t an evil, insulting power grab by a Mafia boss turned dictator against an ally AND that Canadians even wanted statehood:

Why would it be 1 state instead of the 10 provinces being states? Clearly because it isn’t a serious proposal, but I mean, wtf?

  12. Trump’s administration is more likely to go to war with Canada than China because Canada has the resources and lacks the military capabilities, whereas China is one ocean away and is embarrassing the US in the AI race.
