  1. There is an existing free trade agreement between the EU and Canada called Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

  2. Fuck it, why not. Might as well rejoin the free world, now that half of it wants to kill itself for no reason.

  3. I for one would be happy about it. They seem to be great allies and is so shameful how US disrespected them.

  4. It’s a funny world we live in.

If mexico and the EU retaliate with tariffs then the USA will be basically boxed in.

China won’t help them. Russia will welcome this also.

So who is left? Some parts of Africa? Brazil?

Also this is a perfect opportunity for working class in US to rebel because if you are boxed by tariffs they have to repy on you and move production inside the country. So you have room to negotiate with the government to get what rest of the world already have

    – Public health care
    – Public education
    – Reasonable drug prices
    – Paid vacations
    – Paid maternity and paternity leave
    – Police that held responsible for murdering you when you step out the line

You know, benefits we in normal world call common sense.

  5. Not sure if joining the EU is the right path but closer co-operation certainly makes sense.

  6. So while getting rid of all Americans services as of now, the more Europeans that get rid of paying money to Netflix, prime, ChatGPT and what have you, the better.

Alternatives like Viaplay, deep seek etc. are available.

  7. As long as we get rid of the damn veto, I’d be on board.

  8. Theoretically are the countries that could ask for membership reduced to the european continent. But nowadays we have potential members from asia.
So you are welcome. We also speak French – if that helps.

  9. Canada could reastically not join the European Union as there’s no political momentum for it right now but that’s no problem at all because you see **tons** of these kinds of hybrid-agreements between European Member States and e.g. Canada that could practically mean the same thing other than in name.

  10. Yes, you are so welcome. Guys anyone wanna break the bad news though? What? Nobody? Oh, well….Alright, I’ll do it. We have an annual song contest….

  11. It wouldn’t work for Canada. The EU is not just a free trade area. It is also a customs union, not to mention a political project.

What makes a customs union different from a free trade area (like CETA, CPTPP or USMCA) is that it is exclusive. If Canada were to join the EU, it would immediately be forced to leave the USMCA, CPTPP and all other free trade agreements with non-EU countries.

75% of Canada’s trade is with the USA. The EU does not have a free trade agreement with the USA. Joining the EU would mean that the EU common external tariff would have to be imposed on all imports from the USA, and with the abolition of NAFTA/USMCA, the USA would in turn impose its external tariff on Canadian goods, crippling the Canadian economy.

On the other hand, Canada could join the European Economic Area (like Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), without joining the EU and its customs union. This would, however, mean that Canada would have to adopt all EU regulations without having any say in developing them.

  12. fuck yeah bros, rejoigniez nous les frangins

I don’t see it happening but it would be so amazing

  13. I don’t think Canada needs to join the EU but the EU, Canada and other like minded countries and blocs (including the UK) which are all liberal democracies, with broadly very similar outlooks need to start making more effort to cooperate to protect themselves against chaos over the next few years and beyond.

There are a quite a few countries out there that are strong democracies with very similar values and outlooks and a lot of exposure to the US. We can’t just allow ourselves to be driven over by Trump and USAmerican chaotic politics.

  14. Yeah, but you Canadians would have to do a government program to culturally europeanize and soften the north amercianess.
No more comically huge pick-up trucks, no more car only single family home suburbs, Public transport and walkable everywhere.

  15. r/conservative seriously don’t seem to understand how fucked they are…. The gen z sub is equally clueless about it.

It’s actually terrifying what’s going on over there and it’s been barely a month that this orange arse haemorrhoid has been in charge along with VP Elon Titler

  16. Fuck it, let’s include them in the EU. Their culture, outside of the first nations, is very close to the british one, and they were allowed in. Being European, like how it was to be a Roman in the past, is not about being born somewhere, it’s about being part of a culture and a following a set of ideals and values.

  17. I have high doubts. EU is a long term political project. I doubt Canada would like to join the Euro or be ready to be subject to our many rules. I even doubt Canada is worried about Europe’s problems in general, as it is isolated from them.

What would make sense would be to deepen our cooperation, which could be in multiple levels, probably starting by implementing CETA (which is still awaiting ratification from multiple countries!). It could maybe join European Economic Area, but this already means aligning with EU regulation which are different from US.

It could also maybe join other European organizations/agreements, like the European Space Agency, become a full member of the Council of Europe (human rights) or Schengen Area (open borders).

  18. Please do. And bring those Brits back with you. They are annoying twats but we still love them. Kind of.

  19. As a Canadian: can we please join the EU? The mobility would rule. And I’ll show you around if you come to Canada. Promise

  20. would be the gamer move of the century then include australia also I mean they are already in eurovision

  21. Trudeau being front and center in the article’s picture gives away the problem here: This view is largely put forward by the Canadian equivalent of diehard liberals in the US who hate Trump, and much like their American cousins they are poised to take an absolute electoral beating.

Once Pierre Poilievre takes over, with him will come the rule of people who are (ironically, given his name) deathly paranoid about too much undue influence in Canadian politics from the French Canadians, let alone actual France and other foreigners from overseas.

In that regard, this view and proposition ironically represent a politics that is going out the window, not newly emerging.

  22. As a Canadian I’m looking forward to all kinds of trade with the EU. Anything American is off my list these next 4 years.

  23. Australia joined the ESC, so why not? I’ve always had a soft spot for you guys ❤️

  24. Don’t know if they can but hell yeah you are welcome brothers! We love Canada♥️

  25. We in Europe are not forgetting you dear Canada. Every time I see a statue or cemetery where your fallen soldiers are honoured for freeing us Europeans of tyranny I take a moment to realise how important Canada has been for us. So in a personal sense, I would love for Canada to join our family.

However, we also need to be realistic. The EU is a union, somewhere between a confederacy and a federation. It might not precisely align with the ambitions Canada has. Luckily we do have a solution for this in the form of the EEA, The European Economic Area. In my opinion, this option should be taken more seriously on both sides of the Atlantic as a viable step in the right direction. Who knows what the future holds 🇪🇺❤️🇨🇦

  26. I’d welcome Canada to the EU anytime.

The former German secretary of foreign affairs has proposed to do so, saying “Canada is more European than some countries in the EU”.

  27. You are welcome – we already have a land border with us in Denmark.

  28. We share the same values, we speak the same languages, we share borders, who cares if they’re not in Europe!

    PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

    🇪🇺🤝🏻🇨🇦

  29. Biggest FU we could do to the US is getting rid of the DMCA and replacing it with our own lol. Pull on a Russia with piracy on their passes, their entertainment industry would freak out.

  30. Canadians are friends, I’d love to see you on board!

  31. Don’t join the EU, Join EFTA, would be a better fit, like Norway. The European Free Trade Association, Iceland is in EFTA too.

  32. Pleeeeeeease

We have potash, crude, hydro, maple syrup, steel.

  33. Canada would be absolutely welcome. Then create a real EHL, too. 🏒

  34. Closer cooperation would be amazing. But outright joining is probably not feasible. There is also significant differences between Canada and the European countries.

Also, the EU is not only a trade organization but also a political one. I can’t really see Canadians being happy about rules that are decided half the world away. It would also limit Canada’s maneuver room for making its own trade agreements.
