No warning needed. Of course we should and not just because it’s our backyard, but because it’s the right thing to do.
Its a few years we should have the ammunition and missile production going on by now but somehow dont, especially with Trump on the horozon things should have been done long ago.
Britain invites Germany for tea to talk about defence. For those who know a bit about history will likely also catch this sends a not so subtle message of change or at least about intent of change. Apart from that don’t forget berlin is in election mode and UK is not EU anymore, yet significance of such meeting is still the same.
Obama gave a speech in 2015 that’s not widely known today, but in it he warns against this specific sort of slow response happening. He was very honest and said that if Ukraine were to fall, it would absolutely suck for maintaining long term peace in the region and even possible US interests, but it’s not a fatal blow to America either in terms of economics or power projection.
Europe needed to wake up and realize that no amount of concession or GDP growth for Russia would mean Putin decides “OK, now I will stop!” The “bury your head in the sand and hope for the best” approach Merkel and Sarkozy took was just not it. I think Cameron and later Macron realized that fairly quickly.
Defend? Europe has to be ready to actively fight the USA….
European NATO members need to modernize more and share a large part of that modernized equipment to Ukraina. And modernize with European made equipment.

Luckily Trump only has 4 years which is not enough time to take Canada, Panama and Greenland unless they really want to go to war. No EU country has taken defense spending seriously. Maybe just with Ukraine A few want to.
Every single EU country has all made supporting armies. Fulling depending on the US military for actual protection. Has been this way since WW2.
On top of the US spending enough on the military to protect Europe, Asia, the middle east and Africa.
After WW2 the US basically rebuilt Europe and Asia.
The EU/ Nato members got used to using America to pay for their defense, And especially after the Soviet Union collapsed. They Saved money by Not spending the appropriate amount to defend themselves. And used the budget to do fun social programs like free healthcare and what not.
Not even America has the production capacity to produce the most basic artillery shells to meet Ukraine’s needs.
The EU would end up completely disarming itself trying to support Ukraine for half a year.
Good news is Trump seems to be supporting Ukraine.
All this Trump stuff I would hope the EU gets a wake up call and really starts arming itself to where they could support a foreign war for a extended period, Even if it means cutting social programs.

What are these ‘one way tariffs and anti-US trade policies’ ? The only country Canada exports oil and gas to is – the US. (?!) US customers (business and home) pay a lower rate for Canadian electricity than Canadian customers. So again, ?! Prior to trump, the US discouraged development of Canadian defensive / weapons systems – for instance, albeit a long time ago, the development of the Arrow. That’s a prominent example – there are others. The US encouraged dependence on them – now decry that dependence as ‘riding their coat tails’. Not that you don’t make any relevant and realistic points – however, it is not as simple or straightforward as you make it out to be.
