  1. What exactly is Martins strategy here? Does he really think he can stop hundreds of Irish people being deported? I don’t think Trump is going to want to be seen to be showing favourites….

A real shitty situation all round.

  2. They are illegal? What’s he going to say to him?

Why is the Taoiseach using diplomatic capital on Irish citizens who are in another country illegally, surely there’s a better use of this airtime.

  3. I hope he sells him Rockall in return for Hawaii.

And I reckon at this point Hawaii would accept the deal.

  4. If a small country asked us to give favourable treatment to people who illegally emigrated here how would the public reaction be ?

I don’t think we should expend any political capital here ultimately the law is the law and Ireland is hardly an unsafe place to be deported to.

  5. He has to do it.  But really what he cares about is the FDI.   Irish politicians are terrible at reigning in special interests at home or at managing the cost of living.   But they are generally good at diplomacy.

I think Martin should do ok with Trump & co.   I’m glad it’s him and not Simon Harris.

  6. Like only thing that could work would be an exception for Irish illegal immigrants but not sure why trump or America would agree to it as wouldn’t go down well with their base

Seems like a pointless thing to do that would waste any political capital that when we have should be focusing on avoiding/minimising tariffs and their impact

  7. I fucking hate the term undocumented.

Call them what they are. They are illegal immigrants .

  8. Trump will lean on him about Ireland’s support of Palestine or some similar transactional bullshit. The spineless plonker will capitulate and succeed in sfa.

  9. No but see those are white folks and trump won’t go after white folks.

  10. I say this as someone who has had family deported from the US for living there illegally. Fuck them, they broke the law and got caught, why he is doing advocacy for them is beyond parody. It doesn’t make them bad people, but they know themselves they were on borrowed time.

  11. Like or not these people are illegal. Why should they get special treatment over the others?

  12. He could have said something last year when ~700 Irish people were deported, but there were no headlines about those people so MM didn’t care

  13. Keep them there says Mícheál, we don’t want them voting at home

  14. Wrong hill to die on Micheál. Suprised Joe Duffy didn’t stop him “But I want dem calling in crying fer me ratings”

  15. I think he watched gangs of New York & is worried about this Irish rabble taking over the 5 points. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s trying to hire Daniel day Lewis to head up ICE as his staff try to explain he is just an actor.

  16. Would Martin entertain calls from.oreside ts in any other country asking for the same for their undocumented? Like fuck he woukd. This is just him saying what he expects people to day..probably has some tds or councillors in his ear and needs.to be seen “taking steps..

  17. I remember telling one of my sister’s D4 friends about how my idiot brother got himself deported by lying to the customs agents, and how awful and dehumanizing his experience was. She was planning to go to the US and overstay her visa and her reply to me was along the lines of “sure it’ll be grand”.

About six months later, she makes a page-long Facebook post about her unjust ordeal and how the immigration agents treated her like she wasn’t a person and basically exactly what I said might happen to her

  18. We don’t care about them. Why do they think we care about them?

  19. I have a cousin illegally in the US, visa overstay, and the girl is a big Trump fan, she had thought when he talked about the illegal immigrants he meant the non-white ones.

She is afraid to leave her house now the daft bint. Good enough for her.

  20. They are there illegally, fully within their rights to send them back to Ireland

  21. One muppet speaking to another, should be an interesting conversation none the least!!

  22. I agree with everyone saying this is a waste of vital political face-to-face with the most powerful person in the world, especially when we are potentially on the cusp of a very serious breakdown in that relationship. More than that, I’m angered by the arrogance of it. A person must make their own decisions, and illegal Irish immigrants in the states did that; I resent that they or our government believe they’re entitled to special treatment because why? They’re white? They’re European? Because they’re in danger of being sent home to a first world country while other immigrants are being sent home to mortal danger…

  23. If they’re illegals then surely they’re thriving in America and not a drain on the bare bones social systems in place there.

Id say welcome home. Bring some of your new found American wealth and skills back with you and start up a business here.

  24. Imagine risking the livelihood of almost a million Irish peopl, and our entire way of life, for 125 scumbags who couldn’t be bothered to file for a work visa, despite having a 100% chance of approval.

We have idiots, genuine morons, in charge.

  25. This isn’t new. We consistently bring this issue up to Irish presidents at every possible chance. In fact it was directed at Biden when he was at the Dáil for his state visit.

  26. I know more than one illegal Irish that lauded trump…

I Listened to one of their grannies whimpering about them possible being turfed out in the pub this week

  27. We haven’t done tech support since the 2000’s in Ireland. That company is an outlier if it is still running tech support in Ireland. It’s a low skill role in global terms. Ireland has been high cost for a decade. A lot of Chicken lickens on this thread.

  28. What the actual feck, like? Instead of protecting Irish jobs, he’s going to waste this precious opportunity to speak up for a load of middle class criminals.

They broke US law, they can eat the consequences.
