TIL Guinness had trademarked the harp prior to the Irish Government so the harp is the opposite way around on official Irish documents and flags

  1. The harp used on the flag of the kingdom of Ireland resembles the current President of Ireland flag. The soundboard is on the right in both cases.

Guinness’s trademark harp, which is newer than the flag of the kingdom of Ireland, has the soundboard on the left. So the government did not choose to reverse it; Guinness trademarked a different harp.

  2. It’s a bit like the Euro symbol € having two dashes instead of one as Epiphone trademarked it first.

  3. Maybe Reddit Ireland could use a harp, rather than a horse’s head as its logo – would look a lot better !
