BBC News – University graduations: How much are students prepared to pay?

  1. I didn’t go to mine. All my friends were from halls, not my course; I don’t like formal events like this either. My mum seems to have a lingering sense of disappointment over not having a picture with me in a cap and gown but I have my degree and that is all I care about.

  2. I frankly don’t give a shit about mine; will just be going for my parents so they can get a nice picture.

  3. I graduated in the mid 80s. Had to hire a gown, but that was it. The college even put on a free dinner, a pretty decent one too.

  4. Pay??

I paid for hood hire for my first, but only paid gown&hood hire for the other three because my parents paid for it (I wouldn’t have gone to the MSc one but they wanted to – and regretted it, 3 hours of boredom in the heat).

There were plenty of opportunities to pay for photos if you wanted, but that’s life.

  5. I can think of a hundred more serious, systemic or dysfunctional problems with universities right now, than what they’re charging for the glorified photo op at the end.
