I didn’t go to mine. All my friends were from halls, not my course; I don’t like formal events like this either. My mum seems to have a lingering sense of disappointment over not having a picture with me in a cap and gown but I have my degree and that is all I care about.
I would have *maaaybe* stretched to £10, if there was lunch provided.
I frankly don’t give a shit about mine; will just be going for my parents so they can get a nice picture.
I graduated in the mid 80s. Had to hire a gown, but that was it. The college even put on a free dinner, a pretty decent one too.
Pay??
I paid for hood hire for my first, but only paid gown&hood hire for the other three because my parents paid for it (I wouldn’t have gone to the MSc one but they wanted to – and regretted it, 3 hours of boredom in the heat).
There were plenty of opportunities to pay for photos if you wanted, but that’s life.
I can think of a hundred more serious, systemic or dysfunctional problems with universities right now, than what they’re charging for the glorified photo op at the end.
Really doesn’t help that Ede and Ravenscroft have a near-monopoly on gown hires.
