Electric vehicle maker Nio registered 14 vehicles in the Netherlands in January, according to official data. A year ago, when the extra tariffs imposed by the European Commission were not yet in place, the company had recorded 10 units.

Nio expanded to the Dutch market in October 2022 and last year’s registrations stood at 233 vehicles. The Shanghai-based brand has currently six models available in its European markets.

In January, Nio registered six ET7 and four ET5 sedans, three EL8 SUVs, and one EL6 vehicle. The flagship five-seater SUV, the EL7, recorded zero sales.

New passenger car registrations in the Netherlands fell 4.6% year-on-year in January to 32,804 units, down from 34,392 a year ago. However, EV sales increased 28.2% to 11,157 units bringing the market share of fully electric cars to 34.0%, up from 25.4% in January 2024.

Hybrid vehicles led the market, accounting for 45.5% of all new registrations, with 14,934 units registered.

Tesla’s registrations dropped 42% year-on-year to 927 vehicles, while Zeekr and XPeng also saw declines of 36% and 16%, respectively. In contrast, BYD, Polestar, and Nio reported increases, registering 239, 117, and 14 vehicles, respectively.

In early January, Nio said it was temporarily reducing prices for its charging and battery swap services in the country by 34% as it aims to increase first quarter sales.

Until the end of March, Nio drivers can swap their car’s battery or charge at Nio’s stations for €0.29 ($0.30)per kilowatt-hour (kWh), down from the previous rate of €0.44/kWh.
