  5. Probably a quid pro quo for Trump propping up Bukele’s bitcoin by establishing an American stockpile of cryptocurrency.

    Bukele was (I think) the second call Trump made after getting inaugurated.

  6. To be clear, Bukele isn’t asking the U.S. to deport American citizens, or anyone to El Salvador. He wants CECOT to be considered a detention option for criminals in federal custody, including Americans.

    For a fee, of course.

    Doubt it is practical (or legal) to try and contract federal detention duties of American citizens to a facility in a third country, wholly run and operated by a foreign government and one that would not pass U.S. BOP standards. CECOT is literally magnitudes worse than an American Supermax.

    Even if the U.S. just focused on relocating illegal immigrant criminals convicted of crimes and currently in federal custody, especially if they are from recalcitrant countries, I wonder if that is legal since it technically would be a third country detention and not a third country deportation meaning the same BOP standards would apply.

    And even if it was considered a deportation, no matter how shitty a person is, is it fair game to deport them to a foreign country where they’d be thrown into prison for a crime they committed in a completely different jurisdiction?

    Because Bukele isn’t going to accept TdA gangbangers deported to El Salvador without throwing them in prison.

    President Nayib Bukele “has agreed to the most unprecedented, extraordinary, extraordinary migratory agreement anywhere in the world,” Rubio said at a signing ceremony for an unrelated civil nuclear agreement with El Salvador’s foreign minister.

    “He’s also offered to do the same for dangerous criminals currently in custody and serving their sentence in the United States even though they’re U.S. citizens or legal residents,” Rubio said. He had just met with Bukele at his lakeside country house outside San Salvador for several hours.
