Since the winter solstice, the length of the day in Latvia has increased by two hours.

On December 21 last year, the sun rose at 9 am and set at 3:43 pm in Rīga, giving a day length of six hours and 43 and a half minutes.

On February 4, the sun rose in Rīga at 8:15 and will set at 4:59 pm, giving a day length of eight hours and just under 44 minutes.

Each day thereafter will be four to five minutes longer. As of March 18, the day will be longer than the night. Astronomical spring will arrive on March 20.

February 5 will be the first day of the solar spring. The brightest three months of the year, or solar summer, will be the period from May 7 to August 5.

As already reported, the meteorological winter in Riga and the Kurzeme coast is still not here and may start this week. Meteorological winter occurs when the average daily air temperature is below zero for five consecutive days.

However, the onset of meteorological spring is possible after February 6, which is statistically the coldest day of the year. It starts if the average air temperature is above zero for at least five consecutive days.
