American nuclear power company Westinghouse, in collaboration with South Korean Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company, will carry out a technical feasibility study (TFS) for Slovenia’s planned second nuclear power plant, Krško II, to be built next to the country’s only existing plant, Krško. The study will evaluate the installation of an AP1000 nuclear reactor for Slovenia’s state-owned energy company, GEN energija.

“Since the commissioning of the first Krško unit, which has been operating successfully since 1983, Westinghouse has developed a decades-long partnership with GEN energija through operational and fuel support,” said Dan Lipman, President of Westinghouse Energy Systems. “We are pleased to expand this relationship to thoroughly assess the feasibility of the Krško II project.”

The US company is involved in the supply and development of several nuclear power plants in the region, in Poland, Ukraine and Bulgaria.

There are currently six AP1000 reactors operating worldwide, with twelve additional reactors under construction and five more under contract. By the end of the decade, 18 units are expected to be in operation globally.
