  1. In before the those who say it is permissible and to ignore people doing it. It isn’t. Theft is theft.

  2. In other news – if you don’t prosecute criminals- they increase their efforts. What will it take to rescue the shops from Sadiq and the lack of police enforcement?

  3. “Sadiq’s London” hehehe

    (bring on the downvotes 🍿)

  4. Fund us enough that we can deal with domestic abuse and knife crime effectively and then we’ll talk about shoplifting. Until then, it’s stuck being an “if we see it we’ll deal with it but nobody’s focusing on it” job.

  5. Nothing says failure like massive increase in crime.

    Poverty forcing food theft? Maybe…

    Lack of policing… Definitely…

Lack of criminal justice system? Sure…

    Jails system in collapse…. Sure…

The UK is falling apart thanks to billionaires and their stupid projects like brexit….

Nonsense that doesn’t help anyone and just wrecks the country…

Cutting funding for every public service and giving tax breaks to the ultra rich and turning London into a property money laundering scheme for the world rather than a city for Londoners also doesn’t help.

Government should focus on the normal lives of normal people and making them better.

  6. Why any surprise?

Shops with security guards unwilling/unable to detain shoplifters when they steal.

Huge funding cuts (again) to the Met which means they can barely respond to serious violence, let alone theft.

Pathetic sentences at court which don’t actually lock up shoplifters or seek to treat the underlying causes eg addiction.

Won’t get better till these are addressed.

  7. Shoplifting has essentially become decriminalised. Is this any surprise?

  8. It’s not surprising shoplifting is on the up when the media is constantly reminding people how easy and risk free it is.

In more positive news I see crime as a whole is down per capita but some individual crimes like shop lifting are on the rise. So there is room to be positive if you look at it holistically.

I’d love to know to what extent shop lifting had increased by when it first became a talking point and how much it’s increased since it’s became a talking point.

  9. The media and government acting surprised is the biggest surprise here.

The prices go high, people steal it instead.

Serves them right for being greedy.

  10. Redesign shops. Safe rooms for staff. Once inside, bring down the store front cage and lock the scumbags in.

(More for the looting gangs really)

  11. It’s sad, but inflation motivates these crimes.

    How about lowering prices??

  12. Other big cities in Asia e.g. Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore etc. don’t have this problem. Shoplifting exists there but not so brazen and epidemic.

You don’t get people lining up to make excuses for this sort of behaviours there, and the authorities just get on with doing their jobs properly, nip every shitty trend in the bud without turning everything into an expensive sociology jerkfest.

  13. When the supermarkets have layed-off all their staff and replace them with machines.

I think they get what they deserve.
