**Almost all waves of Ukrainian emigration are linked to fleeing wars and imperial or Soviet terror.**
Yurko Fedynskyi’s grandparents were among those who left for the USA, fleeing Stalin’s repressions. There, they had a daughter who married an American.
Yurko Fedynskyi was born in the USA but currently lives in Ukraine. His last name in his passport is Brever, but he prefers to use his mother’s maiden name, Fedynskyi. The man is reviving the unique Ukrainian tradition of kobzarstvo — performing historical, religious, or moralistic songs accompanied by traditional Ukrainian instruments such as the kobza, lyre, or bandura.
